CapriCast 1.00 – The Pilot DVD

It is upon us.

It’s taken almost a year, but the Direct-To-DVD release of Caprica has finally given way to the airing of it as parts 1 and 2 on SyFy as a regular season of television! We’ve got to say that with the Blood, Boobies and Human Sacrifice that we’ve been privy to seeing so far, it looks like Ron Moore managed to skirt the TV-Gods and Censors quite elegantly by releasing in on DVD first, but what did YOU think of the televised version? There have been quite a few times in his podcasts that he mentioned how the TV version of a Battlestar Episode wasn’t quite his ideal cut (for either time or network restrictions) but with Caprica available for first viewing as an unspoiled DVD version, we’ve already seen what Ron wants us to see… so we’re excited to get the regular reason underway!

Battlestar is over, long live Caprica!

I just watched it and LOVED it!!! The last 10 minutes had me squealing like a girl…oh yeah that’s right I AM a girl.

  2. HB Says:

I squealed like a girl too but I’m a guy! I think this series has alot of potential. Loved it and will be getting the dvd for all them cool extra and commentary.

  3. Kaybrid Says:

    I’m broke until tomorrow. Sniff…Sigh.

  4. Sam-Wagner Says:

Anyone else notice Wander My Friends playing during the “Adama Talk”? or that William Adama was the first name in the credits?

-Sam Wagner (Btw, didn’t get no email about the shirt…)

  5. FilmFan28 Says:

    The ending was so awesome.

SPOILER: Sam said that belief in a ONE TRUE GOD came from the centurions. Now we see how that happened. Zoe-copy was downloaded into a cylon centurion. That’s how the belief in a ONE TRUE GOD came to be a cylon religion. WOW!!!!

I can’t wait for this series to really kick-off next year, hopefully this January.

With such an incredible reveal, I have to wonder what they have in store for us, if the series has a decent run.

    Program completed. By Your Command.

  6. JJ Says:

    SPOILER:

William Adams = William Adama….lol…or is he!?!? …this boy has brownish eyes….and Admiral Adama has blue eyes. What do you think…continuity error or resurrection corruption error. Maybe at one point in the coming story William will die and Joseph will go to Graystone to rez his boy…and it being a prototype, his eyes come out blue….would make that pollygraph scene in the finale mean a little more..

I loved the Caprica theme!! I also loved the “Admiral And Commander” moment when Joseph talked to William at the end. I REALLY wish we never saw in the promo when Joesph said ” name isn’t Adams..its Adama”. It would have made a great WTF moment if it was a surprise.

  7. DarthRazorback Says:

First half was just good, but the second half is when the show really took off. I found those final ten minutes to be EPIC. I wasn’t sure about Caprica, but now I am hooked. That final scene had me screaming like a little girl. ;)

RDM did not disappoint. We have something to look forward to!

  8. Mario Says:

It was a whole lot better than I thought it would be. Last five minutes, I had goosebumps. Explained so much. Ugh, now I have to wait another year for more. Why do they keep playing with my emotions!?

    -Mario

  9. Shaun Says:

Saw the DVD last night, I really enjoyed it, it just kept picking up as the episode went on. I wish we didn’t have to wait until next year though for it to continue!

  10. rogerthealien Says:

Was anyone else surprise by all the boobies in Caprica? :O Was not expecting that at all, anyway can’t complain very good pilot, first half was just waiting for that hock didn’t happen, but that last half hour had me hocked, gutted & hanging up side down oh that last scene had me covered in Goosebumps!! The fact we have to wait a year makes me cry :( .

Lets hope people give this show a chance & not shot in down because its not like BSG.

  11. Frankie Says:

    SPOILER!!!!

OMG watched it again last night. Just thinking about that scene were it says “By your command” – massive goosebumps…and yeah FilmFan28 I just totally spun out when I realised the link between Zoe, the “monotheist” belief and the cylons. Brrrr….more goosebumps. I thought this would help me get through my BSG grief but now I have to WAIT so long. OOhhhhh The Plan comes out later in the year..that should keep me going.

  12. Frankie Says:

    SPOILERS******

So I was thinking ahead to the Final Five creating the skin jobs and it looks as though they were probably created in the same way Graystone created Adama’s daughter. The 7 models all had distinctive personalities…which could be drawn from information on any real person then take any undesirable traits out or add some desirable ones in… and then delete the real life memories…or as in the case of Boomer and later on the Final 5, replace them with new memories……

    Ok….too much thinking.

  13. FilmFan28 Says:

    That’s a good point Frankie.

Maybe the skin jobs the final five created were based on people they new back on Cylon-Earth. We already know that Cavil was based on Ellens’ father.

    Oh great, now I’m thinking.

Maybe the infamous #7 Daniel was based on the “footprints” of Daniel Greystone.

Gods I can’t frakkin’ wait for this series to begin.

  14. FilmFan28 Says:

    knew not new lol

  15. Frankie Says:

Yep I was thinking same thing. People they already knew….. he he Love it.

  16. UNC Zags Says:

    Hey,
Did anyone watch CSI last week?…RDM and Sharon and Ellen all made guest appearances on the sci-fi themed episode (possibly more). It was awesome. I suggest everyone checks it out.

  17. JJ Says:

  18. VVeber Says:

Thought this was good. enjoyed the different pacing looks to be a k00l show.
I concur with the last 10 minutes being the best- it rocked bigtime…
I was overcome with this thought watching the CYLON shoot-em up scene…
so he took out a lot of the personality programming and made CYLONS, then when they showed the ZOE-CYLON…
I was like this has way more personality and I wonder if this “line” of CLYONS becomes the Guardians??
    awaiting the plan!

  19. DarthRazorback Says:

Ahhhh! Now I see why they put out this DVD. “The Plan” is going to deal with the Zoe-Cylons. Damn, that is brilliant.

  20. MariaSUnderland Says:

I watched it yesterday, and I thought it was good.

The ending was indeed the best part of the whole pilot. Out of nostalgia though, I found myself missing our good old characters, and hoping to see one of the Final Fives at some point somewhere (even though they all came during the Cylon war lol).

That being said, I don’t know if you guys noticed, but whenever you saw a Cylon in action, the music would tilt to the type we’d hear in Battlestar, and I thought that was a genius way to tie things in. Same with the Adama speech bit. :)

All in all, I WILL give this show a chance, and I’m definitely looking forward to next year. :)

    SO SAY WE ALL!

  21. Randy1701 Says:

After seeing the Caprica DVD, I’m really looking forward to more when the regular episodes begin.

As far as the DVD extra features, did anyone else watch the “webisode” documenting the behind the scenes production of the “vclub” and note that they filmed it in “The” Opera House, from the Roslin/Sharon/Hera/Caprica-Six/Baltar visions? That is the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver? I belive that the human sacrifice segment may have been filmed at the same location where we see the draped stage in the original Six/Baltar/Hera vision where they then turn around and spot the Final Five all in white robes gazing down on them from the balcony…

All of this has happened before…..

  22. manxome Says:

i was prepared to be underwhelmed by the pilot, but i actually found myself digging it more than i did the bsg miniseries! maybe it’s the four years of prep i had, but i was drooling over every little thing! little world building things like the custom of wearing gloves upon a death, the pyramid game, the crime family, the frakkin’ exterior of the greystone crib, WILLY ADAMS/A!

so much cool stuff, and the themes were so poignant in light of the ending of bsg too, the holoband thing essentially being human projection, the birth of the cylons spurred on by the desire to bring back a dead loved one – human ressurection…the cylons were always created to be not just like us, but how we wanted to be! great great stuff.

  23. UNC Zags Says:

I am curious to see if the Caprica series will involve the first cylon war. That would be frakking awesome. I think this will be a good place to take the series and maybe they could also deal with the resurrection technology and the cylon uprising and homeworld.

  24. FilmFan28 Says:

I’ve got a theory: What if the Zoe-centurian was the one who negotiated with the final five to end the war and accept their help in creating flesh bodies?

  25. Frankie Says:

Did they ever mention on BSG how long the first cylon war lasted? I can’t remember hearing that. The second war started 40 years after the end of the first…which means Caprica is set 18 years before the end of the first war…but depending on how long the first war lasted…we may not be far from the start of that war at all.

  26. Frankie Says:

hmm might have to check out RAZOR again. It might have some clues….

  27. Jinx Says:

Whew, for a moment there I thought the Zoe program was completely gone and Graystone had implanted Adama’s daughter in the cylon instead. That would’ve been really wrong.

I did find it rather slow paced. But it was nice to find out that Baltar isn’t the only person in the universe with an accent.

What a coincidence that the guy who led humanity to escape cylons in the future is the son of the guy who helped Graystone secure the cylon AI technology in the first place.

  28. CB2001 Says:

I will say, “Caprica” is pretty good for what it is (and it’s not just because of the boobage either. But I give props to Moore and Eick for including it. J/k). I may post a review sometime later. But seriously, seeing little Billy Adama… It brought a tear to my eye knowing that poor little kick is going to grow up to be the jaded old man who is humanity’s last hope. But at least he grows up to be a bad-ass. :D

Anyways, this is just a friendly little remind for those who didn’t catch it in the last topic:

To anyone of interest. Knighthawkdc and CB2001 (aka Codebreaker2001) will be hosting an unofficial and informal gathering for rewatching episodes of “Battlestar Galactica”. The name of the viewing/chat will be called “Operation: Rewatch”. Now, when we mean unofficial, we mean that that site that the chat will be hosted at, BSGPilots, will be where the chat is but is not an official BSGPilots project (an official rewatch by BSGPilots may come some time later, but the chat that we’ll be doing is no official). If you’re not already a registered user at BSGPilots, that’s okay, the registration is free.

Also, there are a couple of points of order that you should be aware of when it comes to the rewatch. Here are the points:

Point 1 – Project: Rewatch will begin on April 30. Since we are starting off with the first mini-series, the start time for the viewing of the mini-series at 8 o’clock pm, EST (Eastern Standard Time). For regular episode rewatches, it will be Thursdays at 9 pm EST.

Point 2- Newbies to BSG in general are welcomed, however, you should be aware that the chats may contain major spoilers to events in the series that appear later on. So, I stress heavily: If you DO NOT want to be spoiled to what is to come, DO NOT come into the chat.

Point 3- When it comes to the order of the show for Operation: Rewatch”, for Season 2, we’re going to change it up a bit by including the TV-movie “Razor” as a part of the Season 2 viewing setup. Which means, that after “Captain’s Hand”, we will then watch “Razor” before moving on to “Downloaded”, seeing that “Razor” takes place in between the two.

Point 4: We will be watching the unrated/extended versions of episodes presented. So, when it comes to Season 2’s “Pegasus”, we will be watching the extended version. For “Razor”, we will be watching the Unrated Extended version. And for Season 3’s “Unfinished Business”, we will also be watching the Ron Moore extended cut.

You can find BSGPilots here: http://www.bsgpilots.com

  29. Frankie Says:

I might pop over to BSG pilots as that’s 10am Friday’s here in Perth. It’s my day off too!

Well I’m watching the minisodes on the Razor dvd and they give the ‘time’ as ‘First Cylon War, day 4571′ which means the war must have lasted at least 12 years. This means Caprica is set only around 6 years (or less) from the start of the first cylon war.

    YIPPEE!

  30. manxome Says:

    cannot wait til next year!

  31. Maria Says:

Frankie – That would make William Adama 16 when the first war starts, 28 when we see the actor that plays Husker in Razor. I would say continuity of the time line has been handled pretty well across the board here. :)

I cant wait to see how the Plan ties itself in with Caprica, at least I’m hoping it will to some extent.

  32. archont Says:

lol @ next few days… So six days, almost a week, since you said you’d give us a video in the next few days, not too reliable, are we?

On a not so related note, I always enjoyed your BSGcast and am looking forward to capricast, when it, at last, arrives :)

  33. AztinStye Says:

Great show. Of course it makes me question even more. Exactly when were the skin jobs created? On BSG I got the impression they acctually existed before the Cylons and used them to somehow resurrect them (the skin jobs I mean). Keep an eye on the Head Mistress. I suspect Zoey had help with her “discovery”. Can’t wait ’til the new episodes start coming in.

  34. BSGcast Says:

After mulling the episode/movie over in our heads for a while, and reading the generally positive feedback here on the site, Nat and I just shot our review for Caprica last night! We’re hoping to get it posted up here on Monday… but we’ve also got our Wolverine preview coming down the pipe that day too. I want to get CapriCast up first :)

    ~Matt

  35. manxome Says:

really looking forward to hearing you guys gush about caprica (if there’s no gushing i’ll be disappointed;) )

    wolverine looks pretty poor…

  36. Mr. Nice Gaius Says:

    **SPOILER**:

I guess we know how the cylons “project” their surroundings… it’s an early Graystone invention. This pilot fed my need for Galactica-drama very nicely. Oh, man… imagine if Moore and Company pull another “One Year Later”… but instead jump a decade to the beginnings of the cylon revolt!

  37. manxome Says:

    @ mr nice gaius

that would f with my mind!!! it’d be an interesting pov too, because there are no military characters in the cast…might have capricans evacuating to other colonies only to be pursued etc.

  38. Pavlov's God Says:

Caprica fits in with the theory I’ve seen here about Daniel Greystone being the hybrid in Razor. It would make sense that he is trying to make a skinjob version of Zoe so he can have is daughter back. He also calls the cylons his children- if they are based on Zoe and his company built their mechanical bodies – they would technically be his children.

But why didn’t they make a Zoe copy when they met up with the final five and started making skinjobs. And why were there no skin jobs on the Razor ship? I’m sure there will be some retcon on this since Razor came out before the backstory of the final five was clear. Maybe A. The Razor ship jumped too far to get back or they were looking for earth B. The skinjobs were trying to destroy Daniel and his ship to get rid of the evidence of where they came from. Daniel might be seen as God or their leader since he made them – I’m sure cavil would not let that happen. This also plays into the theme we’ve seen in BSG that parents have to die for children to come into their own.

One more idea – maybe Zoe is trying to make a copy of her dad (one of the skinjobs is named Daniel) so she can have him back in the same way he is trying to make of copy of her. How sweet.

I liked Caprica but didn’t love it. My only gripe with it was a sixteen year old coming up with memory transfer that no one else could figure out seemed a little too much and a bit of the “genius teenager” cliche. I would have liked to see more backstory on the kids and how they got into the one god idea. That might be coming in the series.

  39. Oscar1123581321 Says:

Wow just WOW .. thats all that was goin through my head when i watched this on the Internet ( i live in the UK and for some reason they havent got round to publishing it on DVD here yet !! anyone know why/when they are ?)

yeah the last 10 mins as previosly mentioned were just mind-blowing in the questions they answered i was in shivers!!

    but one question ..

    what now ?

are we going to get into the nitty gritty of the buildup to the war or just a family drama that ties in from time to time with the cylon stuff? the tradegy of the family deaths happened very early on so it will be intersting to see what t will mean for the Cybernetic Lifeform Node (Cylon) program.

i mean how could this series possibly end (hopefully after a good few years running with good story coherance) satisfyingly if not with the war starting or even being displayed up to the truce ?

theres alot that i would like this story to show and explore .. i just hope that it doesnt dissapoint after this unbeleiveably fantastic beginning …

btw wasnt the music reference to BSG and the orignial score just BRILLIANT ?? had me in tears at some points or near to it .. 10/10

  40. Rob Falk Says:

Great job! Can’t wait to see a Sci-Fi Family Drama in the Colonies!!! Unfortunately we still waiting for BSG Season 4.2 in Germany..! By the gods…

  41. Ian M. (UK) Says:

Shame it’s not available in the UK yet :(

  42. KevinPHanley Says:

Hey great review, I linked to it over on http://www.kevinphanley.com/blog, and I have my own review over there as well. I thought the series was coming out this fall not in 2010? I’m not sure I can wait that long!

    Thanks again!

grab your gun and bring in the cat!

  43. Pavlov's God Says:

I agree with you guys on what was lacking in the show. Zoe is the weakest link. I wish she was developed more – real zoe died too early before we got a feel for who she was. I also agree with you that there didn’t feel like there was a definite direction to where the show was going. We obviously know the overall end but there was not a significant direction for these individual characters for me to say “Wow I wonder where that plot thread is going”

I’m suprised you didn’t mention Bill Adama’s brown eyes.

Sad they didn’t keep “smoking man” around.

  44. KeepTheStatue Says:

I did wonder what could Caprica have that BSG doesn’t and why would I want to watch this. And after watching it I realize how awesome it is. But now I’m wondering what direction will the series go.

Am SOOO looking forward to the series.

    Keep The Statue.

  45. gaseous clay Says:

loved Caprica and getting to see the seeds of BSG being laid down. i’m sure someone has mentioned this already but is Greystone’s house the same house Baltar owns in BSG? also, I thought the centurion was very Darth Vader like but it was cool to see why they were made

  46. JJ Says:

    Hey all!

    Great review!

Sooo..not criticizing the movie or anything..but basically, the downfall of the colonies was the result of teenage rebellion? with the assistance of corrupttion and criminal organizations of course. ha.

As I was watching Caprica, I was just thinking about the show “SPACED” with simon pegg. In one episode where he shows “STAR WARS” to Brian they basically talk about how the entire story of the movie was set into motion by the star destroyer gunner who didn’t blow up the escape pod with C-3PO and R2D2. if he had, they wouldn’t met luke, he wouldn’t have met Ben, etc. If that kid (I think his name was Ben) hadn’t blown himself up, then the daughters wouldn’t have died, graystone probably wouldn’t have found his daughters avatar, wouldn’t have put into his cylon, probably would have lost the contract and no cylons wth special AI…hmmmm..its all started by one minor character again…

So we have close to 5-7 years before the cylon rebellion starts. In the first razor flashback, Husker tells that woman how he was still in school when the war started and that he didn’t think he’d be out in time to fight. so if he is 11 now, give it maybe 5 years (seasons)in school, then probably a general draft amoung the colonies. or Ron could do that whole xx years later thing he loves to do. lol. either that or he’ll let the series end with no war, and have it as a movie like “the Plan”. or gets cancelled after 2 seasons. lol. lets see which happens first.

Check out the complete series box art. looks pretty good.
    http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/04/29/cool-stuff-battlestar-galactica-the-complete-series/

As much as I want to get it now, I feel like it won’t be complete without “The Plan”. I wonder if they are going to make another box set with the Plan included….

  47. Tiberius1111 Says:

Overall, I liked the “Caprica” pilot very much and am excited to see the direction the series will take. Not surprisingly, RDM has created many potential avenues for story development. I think the unique space opera meets family drama tone of “Caprica” will make for entertaining television.

The one nagging issue I have with the series in general is the overall timeline. I guess my old Trekker fanaticism with continuity is showing.

In the pilot’s opening scene we see the words: “Caprica – 58 Years Before the Fall”. We know from the BSG miniseries that there were 40 years of peace after the Colonies and Cylons signed the Cimtar Peace Accord that concluded the First Cylon War and established the armistice that exiled the Cylons into space “beyond the red line”. We also know from “Razor” that the First Cylon War raged across the Colonies for more than 12 years (4,571 days).

Consequently, if Daniel Graystone created the first sentient Cylon on Caprica, 58 years before the fall, that leaves only 6 years before the start of the First Cylon War. If William Adama is 11 in the pilot, it would make him 17 during the flashback scenes in “Razor”.

More importantly, there are only 6 years for the entire Cylon race to: 1. Be constructed by Humanity, 2. To develop a self-aware resentment against Humanity that is so bitter that they resolve to destroy the entire Human Race, 3. Then they secretly construct a war machine sufficiently large and powerful enough to challenge the military forces of all 12 Colonies, spread across 12 individual planets, representing billions of inhabitants. That’s quite a tall order to be achieved in 6 short years – especially considering the Colonies only narrowly defeated the Cylons during that first conflict.

How long would it reasonably take to: 1. Build a secret (but state-of-the-art) base complete with military factories and capital shipyards, 2. Design and build new (technically superior) ships and armaments from scratch, 3. Source the raw materials for Base Stars and Raiders from within the 12 Colonies and move them “off world” to their secret manufacturing facilities, 4. Then build – AND TRAIN – a formidable military force with millions – perhaps billions – of Centurions. This is all accomplished without raising any suspicion or even any notice by a single Human in all of the 12 Colonies. And again, this all has to happen within a 6 year time period.

I guess that’s why it’s called Science Fiction, right. XD

Interestingly, we also know it was the First Cylon War that united all 12 Colonies together for the first time and that the Articles of Colonization were not signed until after the war started. Before the war, the Colonies were intense rivals and I hope that the pejorative Tauron reference “dirt eater” foreshadows this underlying conflict and that RDM will give us some insight to life and events on the other Colonies. Maybe the Cylons are used to tip the balance of power in military conflicts between the Colonies and this sows the seeds of resentment against Humanity – and exposes their weakness.

Anyway, I read a few other posts about the timeline and it was the one thing that really stuck out in my mind after watching the pilot. I am sure RDM wanted to give us a glimpse into Admiral Adama’s childhood and you could rightly argue that making a direct connection to BSG outweighed the need to be realistic in the overall timeline.

Anyway, I’m still very much looking forward to watching “Caprica” – it beats watching those corny SciFi original “B” movies. ;-)

  48. Tiberius1111 Says:

Oops…let me correct my own math…I meant to say that William Adama would be 17 when the First Cylon War began (not the flashback scenes). The flashback scenes of Operation Raptor Talon shown in “Razor” took place at the end of the war, some 12 years later, making Wiliam “Husker” Adama 29 years of age – give or take a year depending on the actual month of his birth (which I don’t happen to know).

  49. Grimstar Cylon Says:

Is there any Fact that “the Plan” will not be included in the Complete Series? As the Mini Series was included in Season 1 DVDs and Razor was included in Season 4.0 DVDs and “the Plan” is finished and in the Can sort of speak, wouldn’t it make sence that “the Plan” maybe included in Season 4.5 DVD set which means the Complete set? Has anyone seen a listing for Season 4.5? Who knows maybe thats why?

  50. JJ Says:

    @Tiberius111 –

Was Husker 29 in the Razor flashbacks? thinking about it more….he would prob be in his early to mid 20s. he was still a rookie in the flashback..(he said he never flew in combat)…so..lets say the war starts when he was 13 (gives it 2 seasons), +12 years would make him about 25…when the war ended. He probably enlisted at age 23 or so and maybe 2 years of training (or less to rush and get more soldiers on the field).

On the cylon army build up…im thinking a kind of skynet scenario…where alot of their tech was already built or in the prototype stage of being built and the cylon AI took it over. Also another scenario, another colony was secretly building that fleet to attack the others and the cylons just took it over claiming for themselves.

On those corny SciFi (or Syfy as it will soon be called). agreed those movies are mostly terrible, but you are also not watching them in the intended way…here is how I watch them. lol
    http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/95304/drinking_game_with_the_scifi_channels_pg2.html?cat=39

  51. Tiberius1111 Says:

@JJ: LOL!!! You’re right, I haven’t been watching the “SyFy” movies properly! Thanks for sharing that link – very funny indeed!

Yes, by my reckoning, “Husker” is 29 years old (+/- 1) at the end of the First Cylon War. You can do the numbers any way you’d like. He’s 11 years old during the “Caprica” pilot which takes place 58 years before the Fall. We also know that the Fall occurred after 40 years of peace with the Cylons at the end of the First Cylon War. It would be calculated as follows: (11+58)-40 = 29.

    OR

If you consider that the First Cylon War lasted for over 12 years (4,571 days) you can calculate the number of years between the “Caprica” pilot and the start of the First Cylon War as follows: (58-40)-12 = 6. You simply add that difference to William Adama’s age in the pilot and you can calculate how old he was at the beginning of the First Cylon War: 6+11 = 17. Then add 12 years to cover the duration of the war, and your back at 29.

Maybe his “advanced” age could be explained by a draft late in the war – maybe “Husker” didn’t choose a military career from the beginning. We now know that his father, Joseph Adama had a peasant Tauron upbringing and was supported by organized crime. It would be an ironic twist if the boy who would grow up to become the physical embodiment of the “Colonial establishment” and who would lead the surviving remnant of Humanity to their final home on Earth began his long and distinguished military career as a draftee. Anyway…

You’re also right that the Cylons could have co-opted Human technology in a Terminator-esque “Skynet” scenario. The only potential flaw in that reasoning is that Humans never built or used Base Stars or Raiders – these are unique Cylon creations. However, these technologies could have evolved during the war, just like the Battlestar Project. I think it would be a little “copycat”, but it is certainly a plausible explanation and a good point just the same.

Maybe “Caprica” will end right before the shooting begins and kick off the next BSG spin-off series – “The Cylon Wars”. I know I’d tune in to watch that! It would be like the “Dominion War” during the last 2 seasons of DS9 where – for the very first time – we saw huge fleets of Federation starships in full combat! It would be awesome seeing the entire Colonial Fleet at its peak fighting against the Cylon tyranny!

I still think we need to remember Leoben’s words: “Adama is a Cylon”…we may yet learn who he was talking about as the “Caprica” series unfolds…

    great review!

  53. JJ Says:

Whatever Husker’s age was in “Razor”, Im sure the writers will either hope we forget about that and just write what they want or they’ll just explain it all away with some funny logic. lol. Oh I know, as I said in my previous post that I think at one point in the series, Little Billy Adama will die and Joseph will go to Graystone to rez him. Maybe there will be an age differnce in the skinjob Daniel makes and also turn his eyes blue. (or Daniel makes a prototype skinjob and installs Billy’s avatar program in it, making him look a bit different). maybe this is what causes the rift between bill and his father. He said they didn’t get along, probably because joseph always had the underlying feeling that he was not his son.

DS9 was fun. It was nice to see huge fleet vs fleet action. hopefully we will see that here as you say. This is my FAVORITE episode of DS9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTgGtJ-PisA . Loved Sisko’s admission to his log then erasing it. Garak FTW! He should have been an operative for section 31. lol. As awesome as the new Star Trek movie is, I would evently like to see a section 31 themed movie or series.

  54. Pavlov's God Says:

After looking at some of the posts and theories, I’m a lot more excited about the potential of Caprica. You’ll can still have the political intrigue, military drama and moral questioning that BSG had. And although this was sold as a drama, there is lots of room for action. There has to be a reason the humans made so many cylons. Surely there will be some interplanetary fighting and one-god terrorists to fight. You also have gang warefare, corporate espianage and racial identity issues that could go down some interesting roads.

I’m curious – when do the cylons start self replicating and do they build/design the basestars and raiders or did humans build them specifically for the cylons? I doesn’t seem like part of the colonies ships and battlestars are so different than the basestars/raiders are so different than vipers.

I love whoever’s idea it was for the jump to the cylon war. BSG was only on four seasons. Caprica will probably be about the same or less so there will need to be a jump ahead to get to the logical ending of the series (the beginning of the cylon war)

  55. Tiberius1111 Says:

@JJ: Yes, you nailed one of my FAVORITE Trek episodes of all time!!! I still remember how my heart sank when Senator Vreenak, clutching the forged Cardassian optolythic data rod in his hand, hissed “It’s a fake!” to Captain Sisko. If JJ Abrams can do to re-imagined Trek what RDM did to re-imagined BSG, we’re in for a great ride.

However, I still would have liked to have seen a “wrap-up” movie that adressed at least some of the open storylines from TNG, DS9 and VOY. Did Picard take Kirk’s advice and remain a captain (ST: VII) , or did he take the promotion to Admiral (TNG: All Good Things)? How did Riker fare as the captain of the USS Titan? How did the Federation and the Alpha Quadrant re-build from the Dominion War? Does Sisko ever leave the Celestial Temple? What did the Voyager crew do after their return to Earth? All worthwhile questions…

“…Because I can live with it…I CAN live with it. Computer, erase that entire personal log.” [Fade to black]

  56. Kattie Says:

I definitely enjoyed the beginning of Caprica. And you can see how it fits in, and where it will go, which is nice.

I would like to know where all this magnificent technology went to? The cyber-bands (can’t remember if that was the actual name sorry), and the very cool touch-screen-paper. What happened to it? Why did it fall into disuse?

I’m also wondering if poor Tamara Adama will end up being Cylonised. It would explain so much about Bill Adama’s absolute hatred of technology. Seeing a bastardised version of his sister would be heart-breaking for little Willy.

And if RDM is planning on making little Willy Adama a Cylon, I think I will cry.

Excellent continuity of having Zoe being a monotheist, and then turning into the first Cylon (yay for finally knowing where the word ‘Cylon’ came).

So…if there’s six years to play with between now and the start of the war…keep it coming!!

I’m guessing that Greystone will be given funding to build more and more cylons, and for those cylons to be just combat trained drones. But, the flaw in the design will be Zoe. She’s going to be the catalyst for SOOOO many things. She’ll give the Cylons free will, and convince them that they are better than being slaves. She’ll begin the first war.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the continuation of this series. I’m hoping that the next few months flies fast, cos otherwise I’ll just forget…

Anyhoo, thanks for the Cast! Matt, Nice haircut btw!
    Kattie.

  57. Kirsty Says:

Something tells me I’ll enjoy this show on a more drama based level as opposed to sci fi. Kind of like how Lost is to BSG, both very different but still very very good (I think bsg is slightly better personally) Either way RDM deserves the benefit of the doubt in my opinon to at least give it a fair shot. I can’t wait till it comes out.

    2 questions

First – I was never really clear on this part. Are the 12 colonies 12 different planets, each with their own name, or are they 12 different countries on one planet named Caprica?

Second – Do I have to add a whole new subscription to Youtube called Capricast? Normally I see the bsg cast clips on youtube before I see them here because I’ve subscribed to that channel and get the updates. I didn’t know about this particular episode of capricast until I happened to saunter past the website today. Just curious. I’d like to stay updated.

  58. Kaybrid Says:

Kirsty: we assume there are 12 different planets. It’s definitely NOT 12 countries on Caprica. Some of the other planets were actually shown in the extended edition of Razor. On the subject, the battlestar wiki states it is possible some of the colonies that haven’t been specifically mentioned or shown are on moons or asteroids. Whatever the case, we assume it is 12 different planets. What we know for sure is that the colonies are on 12 different celestial bodies within the same star system.

  59. Kaybrid Says:

Kattie: the technology that existed before the first Cylon war clearly fell out of use in the technological “dark age” that followed the war. They were just starting to network computers again and advance their technology before the nuclear holocaust happened. All this was established in the mini-series. Reference Adama’s conversation with Roslin when they first met on board Galactica and what Baltar was saying near the beginning of the mini-series before the attack. It was computers, networks, technology, that made the humans vulnerable to the Cylons. Technological regression was a defence against this.

  60. Lt. Ripley Says:

    Hi folks,

I GOT MINE! :-) ) Just arrived in the Mail today. Had to order from Amazon U.K….

Well, well. A very good start, I must say. You first have to get around wanting to see more Galactica. This is not Galactica – the camera work, the overall mood, the coloration, the list goes on. It is its own story on its own stage and it is beautiful. The actress you plays Zoe had me sold after just a few minutes of her performance. The Nun – sister whatever her name was – is stunning, sinister, captivating. It all works.

    Looking foward to the series!

  61. VeganDirtEater Says:

Since the Final Five managed to travel from Cylon-Earth to Caprica (58-40=18 years to arrival!) at slightly less than light-speed,
perhaps other Cylons (fully capable of reproducing amongst themselves at least, judging from Cylon-Earth’s apparent pre-Apocalypse success)
managed to similarly travel from Cylon-Earth to Caprica in the past.

What hasn’t been revealed is when FTL travel was developed among the colonies. It apparently had not been developed on Cylon-Earth
when the Final Five began their journey 2000-40-5=1955 years ago. (Due to time-dilation, only a short time has passed for the FF).
Unless, of course, the FF just didn’t have access to an FTL ship.

Just as on our Earth in our past, many Crypto-Jews managed to keep their true faith a secret, perhaps Crypto-Cylons have managed to keep
their nature and faith secret. So secret that some may have forgotten who they are. I’m betting that this is what has happened to
the Adama family. Either Joseph doesn’t know he’s a Cylon, or just never gets around to telling Wee Willy.

Sister Clarice Willow surely is fully aware of her nature and faith. And I love that Eye of Jupiter ring. Nice touch from RDM.

I’m really looking forward to the series, and more Ancient Greek being spoken by the Taurons.

  62. Bobathin Says:

I loved Caprica. I think it has huge potential. They could really go wherever they want with it without too much risk of contradicting cannon. I actually liked the actress who played Zoe, although I don’t really believe that the character is a genius. They should have showed more of that side of her (and not told). But it probably doesn’t matter- Ron Moore is a master at using flashbacks, and the show could certainly benefit from them in the future. I would especially like to see the Adama family together before the bombing. What were they like before? How did the bombing change the Adama home life?

I really liked the scene where Joseph tells Daniel what he would tell Tamara. “Find the things that make you cry, because those are the things that make you human.” It’s sort of what I think about Battlestar (and now probably Caprica too).

I can’t wait to see more Clarice and Amanda. A lot of their stuff was cut.

Wow. The deleted scenes had some huge twists in them. I wonder if anything that happened in the deleted scenes will ever be put in the show or revisited? (I don’t think we can accept them as actual events- there were some huge plot points in there that would have been included if they were meant to be part of the story).

Okay, nitpicking. Did any of you find it odd that Zoe was not only able to recreate her personality from “footprints” she left behind in the form of data from different sources, but ALSO her memories? You may be able to create a person from prescriptions, cat scans, recordings, etc., but I don’t think you could actually recreate memories. You would need a recording of an entire person’s life to do that, and Zoe also described in great detail how she FELT in the hospital after bumping her head. I was not even clear about whether her brain was actually copied or not until I listened to the audio commentary, where Ron Moore explicitly states that Zoe did not copy herself, but reconstructed herself from outside resources. There is one scene that makes it seem like she DID copy herself though. “Maybe she found a way to translate synaptic records into usable data.” “She did!”. The word “copy” sure was thrown around a lot as well, even though “reconstruct” or “recreate” is really what happens. I’m obviously being over analytical, but it still confused me. Anyway, the writers are probably being a little vague on purpose. A leap of faith is required either way…Especially when Daniel was able to create Tamara Adama in under a week. I guess Zoe’s code is what makes the whole thing work, if that makes sense.

Anyway, against all odds, I have another 7+ month wait for Battlestar. (sort of).

  63. Adalla Says:

Great to see you guys back!

Though I’m surprised at your pretty negative review of the Caprica DVD. At least that was my impression, because personally I loved every minute of it and to me the quality of it seamed seamless. It truly felt to me like a RDM/Eick production and writing.

I loved the cast, and I’m surprised you guys didnt like Zoe’s actress. I thought she did fantastic and fits the role perfectly. She projects an aura of intelligence and passion that represents that character.

I absolutely loved the return of the epic ethics debate that RDM and co. make us think about like no other show (except Dollhouse…watch THAT for a total mind frak regarding ethics!). I loved the conflicts the characters faced, especially Joe Adama. I loved the CG of the Centurions it was very well done.

Overall I just loved the whole thing and I really hope the DVD makes millions so we can get this thing turned into a series.

I’m not so concerned about the plot, even if we know how it’s going to end. RDM and Eick said that the very fact we know how it’s going to end sets a great shadow over the whole thing and makes us appreciate and see the events that go on in the show from a perspective that we couln’t have had if we didnt know how things would turn out. So in that way, the show is very special.

    Adalla

  64. Tootie Says:

    Loved it.

Loved your cast too – you two are so professional and polished!! and intelligent! And sexpots! You rock! CU at FanExpo in August in Toronto.

I enjoyed the way it portrays life that is coming here on Earth in the near future. The genius teens doing something illicit is a little hackneyed, but overall the plot rocked. The part where Avatar-Zoe is all bloody was really chilling. But I agree that it was hard to believe Zoe was a genius – they could have done a little more there.

Stolz and Morales were fantastic. The others were all solid.

Please all Gods and the one true God, please allow this series to run to completion!!! PLEEEZE.

(Although they had better not blow the final episode like the did with BSG. Don’t flame me – let’s not get into it – we all have our opinions and I will always be disappointed)

  65. Daver12 Says:

I thought it would have been cute though, if let’s say Willy Adama is walking, talking to his dad, and a little girl about his age is watching, and her mother says, come on laura we have to go, and you hear the Adama and Roslin theme. I thought that would have been precious

  66. kaybrid Says:

Well, I’ve been rewatching all the shows again (BSG) and I’m almost finished 4.0. Matt and Nat, do you know when Season 4.5 is coming out on DVD?

  67. CB2001 Says:

Sorry for taking so long to get the review completely done. School is a busy thing. :) Now onto the review.

    Before I begin…. BOOOOOOOOOOOBIIIIIIIIIIES! J/k :p

I was a bit hesitant in picking up “Caprica” on DVD because of the whole thing with “Razor” being included in the Season 4.0 Boxset when I already HAD it. Also, I was hesitant because I wasn’t sure about how good it was going to be, or if it was going to be as good as “Battlestar Galactica” was. Yes, I knew it wasn’t going to have fighting in spacecraft, humanity struggling for survival and all the other things that made “Battlestar Galactica” the way it was, but I mean as good as it was in quality for the story. Me, one of the things I liked about the show was the realistic emotions of the characters, that includes the Cylon characters. But one of the things that is appealing to me is that, though this story covers the creation of the 12 Colony Cylons, it deals with a set of characters we never truly got a chance to get their opinion on in the normal show, a character type I myself am hoping to cover for my machinima comic book fan fiction series: civilians!

    The Characters:
Two families, Adamas (Adams) and Graystones. Now, they’re understandable. I mean, I can understand why Daniel Graystone did what he did. To look at it from Bill Adama’s point of view from “Battlestar Galactica”, you have to understand that losing a wife is one thing, but losing a child is another. Does anyone recall how Helo and Athena reacted when they though Hera was dead? Even more so, how Athena was and what she was thinking at the end of “Daybreak, Part 1″, when Helo told her about Adama’s plan? Honestly, I do not think it was just out of vanity alone. I feel he really cared about Zoey, even if she was stuck up and rebellious. Frankly, when it comes to Mrs. Graystone, her actions are expected. I mean, who wouldn’t slap Zoey for being a brat? And who wouldn’t feel sorry for doing it? The only character that seemed out of place was Zoey. It wasn’t because of the actress who was playing Zoey that I had a problem with. It was the fact that this teenager who resented everything about her parents (which would include her parent’s talents), just so happen to secretly create an copy of herself in an online chatroom? Seriously, if Zoey really disliked her parents, she wouldn’t have gotten into programming (one of the aspects of her father’s career) and creating a virtual copy of herself (It’s practically the same reason why Lee decided to become a civilian and work for the government. Baltar’s trial was just the catalyst). Now, when it comes to the Adamas, we finally get a face to place with the name on the lighter. Again, his actions are also understandable and follows along the same lines of other similar BSG related relationships. Helo and Athena wanting to get Hera back (Season 3’s “Rapture”) and Adama staying behind in a Raptor to see Laura Roslin again (Season 4’s “Sine Qua Non”) are just two examples. And his reaction with his daughter’s AI was a little bit out of left field (How can Graystone gather all the information, create the AI of Adama’s daughter, and NOT include the info about her true nature? I mean, even AI Zoey knew that she was a copy and how she was made, and was in a place where she could interact with others!). Anyways, the names are familiar, not just Adama, but Graystone. I myself came across the name Graystone from a RIS BSG role-playing forum which I was briefly involved. From what I recall from the Graystone character in the RPG, he was the descendant of “the man who created the Cylons.” (and this was a year and a half before the end of the series and before “Caprica” was even a glimmer. I do not know how the user who played the character knew about Graystone, but it must have been somewhere in lore before “Caprica” was released).

Settings: The whole setting and scenes in Caprica didn’t feel at all out of place in comparison to what we’ve seen in the show. To be honest, I was surprised to see the Vancouver Public Library again, since it came up before in Season 1’s “Bastille Day”. Looking at it, I can’t help but find it ironic that Helo and Athena passed by the same spot where Joseph Adama and Daniel Graystone met, and how Six and Doral were standing not too far away from it, too. :p Also, and equally ironic, the V-Club’s setting was shot in the inside of the Orpheum Theater, which we know it as “the Opera House”. Freaky deaky! Also, I noticed that the walkways outside of the Adama apartment looks quite like the ones that we see in “Downloaded”, where D’anna talks to Caprica about being a celebrity (just prior to introducing Boomer and the problem the Cylons are having with her). And the Graystone’s home gives off an eerie familiar feeling of Gaius Baltar’s home. Maybe it had the same home designer within the series’ universe, perhaps?

Story: Basically, the story, to me, is Ron Moore trying to mix “Battlestar Galactica” with a bit of Richard Matheson’s work and “Frankenstein” when it comes to the overall story. But it seems rather weird that the father of the man who would lead the last remnants of humanity to Earth in the future is partly responsible for the rising of the 12 Colony Cylons. I guess, by the way the story is being presented, that the sins of the father is forced onto the son later on, much like how the Old Man Adama did with his sons, Zak and Lee. The thing I can’t help but wonder is this: Getting rid of all A.I. Technology, I can understand especially with what is to happen with the Cylon War. But what about the Holobands? I mean, I’m surprised that technology didn’t get overhauled and used by the mass public, both adults and children alike (instead of it being “just adults” and secretly taken by the teenagers, as it appears to come off in the Pilot). I’m sure that the explanation of why VR and the Holobands being no longer used prior to “Battlestar Galactica” will be explained eventually.

So, in closing and over all…. I give “Caprica” a 4 and of 5 Centurions. and I feel that this will become the logical heir to the “Battlestar Galactica” universe and give us more explanation about the past with the Colonies. I am hoping that the TV movies also expand the series more, as some fans want a story with Kobol that is official (though the closest now is the comic book series from Dynamite Entertainment). But just because “Battlestar Galactica” is over doesn’t really mean that it’s truly over, just yet. SO SAY WE ALL!

  68. Kirsty Says:

Woot! Woot! It’s starts tomorrow night for me! I can’t wait! :D

  69. Kirsty Says:

OK I watched what I thought was the pilot… but it was episode two :( Not happy about that. But I think I’ve been sufficiently caught up. It actually looks pretty good so far. It’s funny to think of Adama’s dad as being somewhat of a gangster, and his uncle is hilarious.
And just a side note… that teacher totally gave me teacher and naughty student fantasies hahaha (I know, I’m a perv haha)

  70. William Says:

    Hi Matt + Nat.
I am looking forward to your weekly review of the CAPRICA episodes on capricast.com! What did you think of Rebirth? Let us know! :-)

    loved it!! :)

  72. MariaSunderland Says:

Am I the only one who noticed the Dualla cameo during the ceremony of the first episode? I COULD be wrong, I mean, it goes by SO fast and she doesn’t have a close-up, but the voice was so familiar it peeked my attention until I was fairly sure it was the same actress.

If it’s true… I hope we’ll get more little cameos like that around. :D

  73. BSGcast Says:

There’s a Dualla cameo in the first episode??

Well, speaking of cameos, didn’t one of the multiple “wives” at the teacher’s house look an awful lot like the actress that played Kendra Shaw? SERIOUSLY. If you get to watch it again, check it out. Hmm perhaps I’ll go check it on IMDB right now muahaha

  74. gilad Says:

can’t wait for your “rebirth” review :)

  75. BSGcast Says:

@Gilead – It’s rendering right now! SHould be uploaded for your viewing pleasure tonight!

@Maria – I asked Kandyse a few days ago about whether she was in any Caprica scenes… she’s not, so that must have been a different stunningly beautiful actress :P Good eye though! You’ll be spotting some of the details WE’LL be missing, I’m sure!

    ~Matt

  76. MariaSunderland Says:

Haha thanks! She looked a lot like her, but mind you I only watched it once so maybe I should have gone back to check. Too bad it wasn’t her. It got me all excited, even if it was in the background and a couple of seconds – kinda like whenever we hear the familiar drums in Bear’s music ;)

Still… Let’s hope we’ll get a few background cameos in the future. It would be very exciting! Thanks for the reply guys!
