CAPRICAST: DVD Gets April 21 Street Date
It looks like Caprica will be hitting DVD before it makes its way to Television, which means we can all watch it commercial free with all kinds of special features right out of the gate. About a month after BSG comes to an end, Caprica will be on DVD on April 21, according to SciFi.com.
Take a look at this SciFi.com exclusive clip of Caprica… in the same way that Battlestar managed to bring fans of Military Drama into watching a space opera, it DEFINITELY feels like Ron and the gang are snagging a whole different crowd to join us in the Science Fiction club with Caprica:

I’m looking forward to this, I really am (Eric Stoltz rules!), but I’m still unsure about it being only one generation ago. BSG gave the idea that the Cylons had been around for a while before they rebelled, here Bill Adama is already alive when they’re around. Eh.

Yeah the whole ‘continuity’ thing seems like it’ll be an issue. I hope they don’t frakitup. But it they do, I hope they frakitup some’n good.

I’m a sceptical about the whole holodeck-like machine being in the series. No one mentions this later on in BSG and no one has one on their ships. They hardly have any monitors or TVs but they had holodecks. You could explain it away as being part of the technology they ran away from after the cylon war but a little too star trek. And ron moore has his other series, virtuasity, that he is working on that also makes use of a holodeck like device. I thought he was trying to get away from the trappings of star trek.
Although this could solve the other problem I had with the show – that there were skinjobs before toasters. Maybe there are not skinjobs in Caprica like we thought. Maybe they are holograms/VR – which makes more sense. I can’t wait to see how the show turns out. It could be great or it could be disappointing but we won’t know for another two months.

Man… this snippet from “Caprica” has me concerned that Galactica will turn out to be a virtual world (it would also explain Head Six). Ron Moore has said that he loved the way “Sopranos” ended. What a kick in the head if it all tuned out to be a make-believe world in Galactica’ universe. I hope that’s not the case. BSG is the greatest TV show ever made.
Matt & Nat: luv ya!

I really dislike the previews I’ve seen for this show. I don’t see how it fits into BSG at all, outside of just sharing a planet’s name. The costume director in Nat’s interview came right out and said there are ZERO stylistic similarities between the two shows. So is this just an attempt to exploit the name Caprica to draw an existing audience to a completely unrelated show? Or my deeper worry – that this show will serve no purpose except to screw up, confuse, or even destroy BSG continuity (or at least, what we know of BSG continuity). If the entire show turns out to have been a hologram, or if somehow everyone knows about the skinjobs ahead of time when we know no one did, then I will have issues.
Is Caprica supposed to be official canon, or should it be considered a separate show in which no revelations will actually impact BSG at all?

@Mr.NiceGaius
If it does turn out to be a Virtual Reality for Galactica, (it seems the way you put it like it would not longer be the best TV show ever made) would that let you down? Why? How do you want it to end? What would make you happy?

A holodeck… Hm…
You know, the first thing that came to mind when I saw this was Cylon Projection. This may explain where the Cylons came to find themselves projecting environments around them.

I still would think this was the best TV show ever if they ended it as a virtual reality gag… I would just love a tangible, physical end to the show… not a “wink wink, fooled-ya!”-Twilight Zone-type ending.
I also am not digging the tone of your comment towards me. I am allowed an opinion, right?
February 9th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Wow. I am intrigued and will watch it. My only question was…is that a space/future version of Second-Life? Weird. Interesting.
February 9th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
No no, my tone is not a negative one, but an inquisitive one (definitely seeking your opinion) Just trying to figure out if the ending of the show would taint your view of the show as a whole. That’s all. :]
I know that a lot of people ‘want’ a certain kind of ending. And if the fans don’t get what they’re expecting then they say it wasn’t a true ending. (I’m referring in general to other shows that’ve ended their run)
But the writers write the show and I (being a fan) am a fan because I appreciate their work and have enjoyment for what they come up with. So even if the ending is typical, stereotypical, or a complete mind frak, I have faith that the writers will stay true to the vision they tried to instill in every episode since the mini series. And knowing that, I feel confident that, in the least, I’ll be satisfied with whatever happens in the last episodes.

(Great name, by the way)
I agree with everything you’re saying. But — and it’s my own paranoia, I guess — since writers and creative people on things I “thought” I enjoyed have ruined perfectly good shows/movies (George Lucas, “Heroes”, “The Matrix Films”, and the earlier “Batman” franchises come to mind).
BSG has changed not only how I look/enjoy SciFi, it’s infected how I look at film/tv in general. That, along with “The Dark Knight”, has shown that TV/film “action” or “scifi” stories can be “grown-up” or as close to reality as possible — and be even more exciting than prior attempts.
I was a HUGE Trekker (since the early 70s). Now, I get embarrassed watching a Next Gen or Trek movie. It’s because BSG made me mature as a viewer.
I want to be floored by the last episode of BSG. The show already tears at me… I would just love the ending to be as closely grounded in reality as the seasons preceeding it.

@Mr.NiceGaius
I agree after watching BSG, Next Gen, Star Wars, etc, they all seem very immature in comparison. Great for what they are yes, but not as ‘realistic’ or plausible as BSG; which is one of the reason’s it’s so badass as a show.
I also want to be floored by the ending. Let’s just say that the entire thing IS a holodeck. And it’s all being played out in ONE person’s (Cylon) holodeck vacation weekend get-a-way. I think it will kind of suck because I (and possibly many others) have called it, but I think Team RDM will treat it in a way that is satisfying for the characters of BSG, the Fans of BSG, and for world of BSG.
But I still want my mind completely frakked at the end though.

I think the disappointment with the holodeck/who shot JR/Newhart ending is that when you rewatch or think about the show it will mean nothing. Who cares if a character dies – he or she is not real. Who cares that they didn’t find earth – there really are no survivors. The whole series becomes pointless and it wouldn’t really be an ending with proper closure to the story we want to see. We’ve watched this show for four seasons and we are not invested in the character(s) that are in a holodeck imagining this story – we’re invested in the actual characters we’ve seen on BSG. I have faith that the show will present a more realistic ending befitting this great show.
As for Caprica and the holodecks, remember that Caprica is only partially based on BSG. The original concept was done by the creator of 24 and had nothing to do with Battlestar Galactica. Only later did they integrate the BSG universe into it to make it more marketable. So the story might not be an exact fit with BSG as we know it – and that concerns me – I don’t want to feel tricked into watching a show just because it has elements of a show I really liked. What next – a legal drama – but it’s based on Sagitaron?
Mr. NiceGaius –
And yes this show has ruined most sci-fi for me also. I’ll look at shows and movies I used to like and just call B.S. on all these situations they get into. I used to love Stargate and now I can’t watch it without thinking to myself “that would never happen” It really set the bar pretty high for future shows (Caprica included) and I hope there will be some shows that can come along and give the quality and depth that we’ve now seen is possible and that many of us will expect from future shows.
February 9th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
I would agree with those who say that BSG has changed everything in the genre of sci-fi but you also have to understand that there are two distinct branches of sci-fi:
1st is the “Space Opera” style like Star Wars, Star Trek, and the original BSG. All very over the top but enjoyable in that fashion.
2nd is the style that BSG gives us which is very gritty, very realistic and not really sci-fi as much as a drama that just happens to have a sci-fi setting.
The first style is more fantasy whereas the 2nd is more reality. The thing is that until BSG, the realistic style of Sci-Fi didn’t sell because people were used to it being the over the top space opera style. This is where BSg has broken new ground with us.
As for Caprica- I am withholding judgment until I see it. I am not a big believer in lightning striking twice but if anyone can do it, Ron Moore can.

@Pavlov’s God
Good Points. I personally think it’s more of the The old god’s of Cobal are actually real. And the scriptures and all of that is real (in the BSG verse). The Galactica herself is the dying leader (though Rosline won’t make it to earth either) and Starbuck is a messenger/emissary whom the gods favor so whenever she dies they just bring her back to help steer humanity to their ‘end/death’. The end isn’t death for all, but more of a death or end of the way things used to be. From that point on they will be more than just ‘human’. The Cylons are just the catalyst to force/help the humans reach this evolved state that can only come about with some sort of death and resurrection.
Maybe it’s like the other butterfly effect. Where first humans are simple caterpillars and in order to become *blank* they need to be reborn.
So what of the human/Cylon babies? We’ll think of when two different countries (w/different languages) meet. They can barely understand each other so one takes a wife/husband of the other and has a child. Then that child grows up speaking both languages and can be a interpreter or bridge to both worlds/peoples.
Or whatever.

“it DEFINITELY feels like Ron and the gang are snagging a whole different crowd to join us in the Science Fiction club with Caprica”
The science fiction club? Is that the one left through the human sacrifice room, or right through the fight room?
February 15th, 2009 at 6:26 am
If you watch the past video preview it shows them transferring a human conscious into a ‘cylon’ type body.
It might just be that this is where they were playing with advanced technology aka ‘cylon’ technology. before they banned having networked computers etc.
the doctor guy is a scientist and was making this stuff for a profit, and human’s did build cylons?

Mr. NiceGaius – that is absolutely one of the BEST handles – just love it!
I also thought your post regarding the critical – or mature – perspective BSG has given its viewers was spot on. Like you, BSG has become the measure by which I judge other television/film productions and assess their value – even relevance. This has had a significant impact on my ability to enjoy even my favorite shows, especially Trek (Good luck, JJ Abrams – now you have two pairs of really big shoes to fill).
RDM certainly must be commended for his effort with BSG and keeping it focused on the drama and not using spectacular SFX to compensate for weak storytelling. It’s a classic sci-fi pitfall that has ruined many otherwise interesting stories. For me, Battlefield Earth comes to mind (Sorry to any fans of the movie). While not every episode or storyline in BSG was equally great – BSG is great entertainment when taken as a whole. I can think of no higher praise than seeing the impact it has had on redefining the genre and the altered perspective so many BSG fans now share when evaluating what makes any TV/film product good and worth the investment of our time.
Regarding Caprica…
I would have liked the story set earlier in time – back when the colonies were still rivals competing heavily against each other – just as their individual identities were being formed (e.g: Caprica as the seat of science and culture, Gemenon as the religious center, etc…). The cylons would have needed much more time than a few decades to: 1. Be created, 2. Become self aware, 3. Harbor sufficient animosity against humans to revolt and 4. Secretly build up a military force powerful enough to defeat billions of humans spread across twelve different planets. The current timeframe of Caprica is just too short for all of that to happen in a plausible way.
The earlier setting for Caprica would also provide an excellent framework for the entire BSG universe and set up the next series: The Cylon Wars.
Well, I’m just trying to pass some time before tonight’s episode…
Thanks for reading and I welcome your feedback and kind response.
