CapriCast 1.05 – There is Another Sky

With the Adama’s finally letting Tamara go in traditional Tauron funeral rites, her Avatar is tearing up V-World almost as well as Zoe is tearing up U-87 at her father’s request. This episode definitely got our heart rates up and brought some plot threads in that we had high hopes for! But did Tamara’s storyline deliver? Did Graystone have much else to do other than what we saw in the Sneak Peek? Let us know what YOU thought!

And don’t forget, there’s only a week and a half left to get your CapriCast intro submissions in to us!

Just finished watching the episode, and it seems my earlier thoughts on tamara gain support in this episode. It seems to me that the game Tamara became involved with will become her jading and training that serves to get her nice and angry and when she is finally inside the cylon bodies or minds via the virtual connection she will be the voice that calls for cylons to stand up and fight for their rights and freedom.

  2. CB2001 Says:

Hey again people. Just making a bit of a review. So far, things are becoming very interesting.

Before I begin, I noticed a slight change in the opening credits. It’s just a minor thing, but I couldn’t help it. After we see Zoey walk by the pillar, instead of the crossfade where we go through some vines and see two unassembled U-87s hanging and passing through the veins to end up at the graveyard. However, for this episode, there is a crossfade where we see the waist of Zoey’s U-87 pass by the camera, continuing the shot of going through some veins (without the two unassembled U-87s) right to the graveyard bit.

Now onto my review of this episode. I must admit, this is really picking up some speed. The only thing that didn’t seem to fit in this episode was the Graystones portion of the story (at least to me anyway). Yes, I know it’s necessary to show the shareholders meeting and the reaction of Graystone’s promise in last week’s episode, but to me it didn’t fit in this episode. Honestly, the Graystone’s bit would have worked better for a later episode that was more in relation to the Graystones (especially next week’s episode). This should have been more of an Adama-related episode, including the Tamara-A.I.

Onto the A-Story review, dealing with Tamara. Honestly, I’m glad we got more of the V-World. And we actually got a chance to see the game that Graystone mentioned in the previous episode: “New Cap City.” After watching this episode, I will say I have played “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” and now wish there was a “New Cap City” total conversion for it. The irony is that for “San Andreas”, there was no multi-player option for it, but a multi-player hack was created by users to allow for multiple styles of gameplay (which surprising enough, seems like last episode and this episode is commenting on video game modding and the “Hot Coffee” controversy that occurred with “San Andreas”). We get some more info in relation to A.I., especially with the Tamara-A.I.: they apparently have the ability to heal from injuries within the V-World. And to my surprise, this episode is beginning to make me wonder if Zoey is really to blame for the uprising of the Cylon. From what things are playing out, especially with what happens to Tamara in this episode, she goes from being exploited to becoming potentially dangerous.

For Joseph and Billy Adama, it’s glad to finally see Joseph wearing down due to the loss. I think its finally got to him. And seeing Billy becoming a bit rebellious was actually becoming a change of pace. And I wasn’t expecting Billy throwing down on the kid that was tormenting him and his dad. The funeral scene, you can truly see that he comes to accept his loss. And then when he finds out Tamara’s A.I. is still in existence, and from what we’ve seen in previews of the wholes season, Joseph is going to go Virtual Gangster in order to get his little girl back.

It is official to me, the series has not finally gone from being in first gear to second gear. I don’t know how many people agree with this, but I’ve got a feeling that many can agree that it’s picking up speed.

  3. CB2001 Says:

Also have an additional detail of irony to point out: In the episode, Tamara is referred to as a “sleeper”, it being a myth about people falling asleep while jacked in. We all know that “sleepers” are Cylon agents that were programmed to believe they’re human, unaware of their
true nature. And even more ironic, Tamara has no idea that she is an A.I., much like a sleeper agent.

  4. CB2001 Says:

Another detail I noticed, last one it will be: The first three icons for the password to the vault in the bank are Picon, Caprica and Gemenon. If I recall correctly, the first three planets attacked in “Battlestar Galactica” happen to be Picon, Caprica and Gemonon, in that same order. Am I right or did I get that wrong?

  5. Kirsty Says:

I don’t really know what to say about this episode. It was great, however I feel like I already saw it through the previews. They are verrrry spoiliery I agree.

I don’t like how Sam as “claimed” billy. I noticed how Billy looked to Sam for a nod before obeying his own father. If I was Joseph I’d be pissed. But I think that it was a good wakeup call for him. It finally got him to pay attention to his son instead of obssessing about his wife and daughter. I’m excited to see how Joseph will try to bring Tamra back to the land of the living. Maybe there is some kind of cloned body they could download her consiousness into. However even if she stays in the V world for a while she could be very coveted or feared by the STO. Tamra may find out how she died and may realize it’s because of the STO. She could kill them or at the very least gain intel on them to pass on to the outside world. She could even kill Zoe thier first child of the children of the human race.

  6. thee_immortal_one Says:

And now for something totally meaning less… Avatar Fashion…
Okay, Zoe’s original purple tunic with gold neck highlight is reminiscent of the original Battlestar Galactica Bridge officer uniform. Think Adama and his blue (sometimes green, depending on TV quality) uniform with the neck highlight/edging.

    Next….

Zoe had her outer shell modified and suddenly when she is in the board meeting her clothes are different. I think we will see her wardrobe change in response to her outer skin and not inner mind set.

    And now for something important….
Zoe is the original bad cylon. Tamara is the red-herring. It is Tamara that starts the war but Zoe will continue it until she tries to sacrifice herself for peace and fails as the “other” cylons created from the avatars of the dead decide that their V-World is the “next” world and since their rapture has occurred then everyones rapture is about to begin.

P.S. Isn’t it like a frak’in Taurin (Yoseff) to get an upstanding Caprican (Daniel) into all this trouble through theft. If the Taurin wasn’t there to facilitate the momentary and perfectly forgivable lapse of the Caprican then the colonies would have survived. I think the Taurins are ultimately responsible for the fall of Caprica.

  7. gilad Says:

My review for the episode is – OMG!
V-Cap, Tamara, the cylon hand part, the changing intro… everything rocked.

  8. stgenerations Says:

Matrix with a TWIST! That’s all it is and I am already tired of it. I will continue to watch but I need it to improve. Everyone is too depressed. The board meeting and the fishing trip were the only bright sparks of the episode. I need some comfort when I watch the show, but it continually feeds me nothing but stress. LOST is an example of a show that has the proper balance of everything. This show doesn’t have it.

  9. Digital Goku Says:

    Ahead in Caprice
Last night’s episode I think was the introduction to the first Cylon Civil War. The Virgis Corporation built Cylons vs GrayStone Industries Cylons. The competition will slowly heat up until the FF arrive to try and intervene . We know where that goes from BSG
We see little Billy’s path toward the military laid out for us.
I’m not sure how Tamara will play into the this thing yet, perhaps it will be her vs Zoe in the war to come.
If I’m correct the first BattleStars have yet to be built, but it is my belief that we will see some reference to them as a result of the Cylon/Coorporate/AI weather its Zoe vs Tamara, Virgis vs GreyStone, or STO Cylons vs some other type of Cylon.

A question that bugs me is: Is the STO somehow tied to Virgis?

  10. Patrick Says:

Did anyone notice the neon “Hotel – No Vacancies” sign flickering when Tamara first saw the external New Cap City?
Wasn’t that the first shot in The Matrix? nice.

BUT – why didn’t we see Zoe after she ripped her arm off? was she happy to oblige her dear ol’ dad? or really pissed? seems a strange oversight…

Thank Gods we didn’t have any more Caprica 90210 scenes with high school – really, really annoying.
Zoe and Tamara and littel Willier are more than enough – box(ey!) the kids asap.

  11. LT Dan Says:

I guess the series keeps showing the consequnces of bad father/daughter relationships…..up to and including the end of a civlization….so give your daughter a hug! Save the worlds!

  12. Kirsty Says:

James Marsters is in the next episode of Caprica! Yipee Spike’s back uh… I mean… What the hell he’s spike! And a few people definitely got murdered but we don’t know who did it… Thank the gods… no more spoilers please :D

  13. thee_immortal_one Says:

I like Goku’s idea of rival cylon manufactured models. This would be in keeping with the tradition of having second procurement sources for critical systems. Wait, what am I saying. The second source requirement exists in the US DOD but it is ignored. Two corporations enter a design and one corporation leaves. Even if the Vergis model is cheaper and better, it won’t survive the congressional buyout plan of the greystones…

Crap, people of the world are corrupt, so I guess the children of humanity will be corrupt too. Wait, is what I said foreshadowing or hindsight?

  14. kaybrid Says:

Tamara is kickin ass and takin names! I wasn’t expecting that from her. Still not sure where she’s going to fit in with the evolution of the Cylons, but I like where it’s heading.

  15. PhilippeP Says:

    Hi All ,
the arrival of Graystone and U-87 at the board meeting reminded me a lot of the first scene of the mini-series.
Thje same robot feet stomp, the same surprised faces from the shareholders/military, the difference is that here it is a human presenting the first cylon, and in the mini series , it’s the cylon presenting the first skin job …
Love the show so far , even if BSG would be hard to surpass …

  16. thee_immortal_one Says:

As far as Tamara being a bad-ass,
If you think a Taurin grandmother was scary, just what do you think an adolescent female could do to you… No wait, not in that way.

  17. Brian Says:

    @CB2001

I must agree with you on all points. It’s picking up some speed and we’re going in interesting new directions.

And who else here almost lost it during the Tauron ritual? What a moving performance! The woman singing the Tauron theme nearly brought me to tears…and then we get treated to an iteration of “Wander My Friends”! Emmy material once again, though I’m sure the emmys will get it wrong once more.

    @stgenerations

Rofl! Are you serious? Lost? That train wreck of a show? Listen here, I’ve seen every last episode (quite literally – I’ve even been keeping up with season six and saw the last one with the lighthouse), and I have come to the conclusion that it jumped the shark two seasons ago at least. You want to compare it to the likes of BSG and Caprica? Shows that HAVEN’T horribly butchered their characters in favor of an unnecessarily complex and arbitrary plot? Shows that actually have decent original scores? The only reason why I watch LOST any more is because I’m curious to see how the writers will end it, and will be quick to point out the undoubtedly numerous plot holes that will crop up if and when everything is explained (okay, and also to exercise my plot-following muscles). And if you want to talk emotional tones, Lost TRIES to be edgy and tense (what you claim not to like). The only difference is that that show fails half the time and these shows (particularly BSG) succeed almost 100% of the time when they want to. Nearly every episode of Lost tries to get that “omg wtf” feel from you, but lately it just isn’t well done at all. Or maybe it’s just because I’m sick of six seasons of that kind of crap. Either way, this season of Caprica blows the latest season of Lost way the frak out of the water IMO, and so does the entire run of BSG (yes, even the god awful last hour of Daybreak. At least it expended some effort to stay true to the characters – something that Lost threw to the wind a long time ago. All of the interesting characters have either been killed off or completely ruined).

See, it’s shows like Lost that piss me off when the emmys come around the corner. I’m not saying that this happens all the time, but I’ve found that there are some scifi shows that have been wrongfully marginalized simply because they are scifi shows. There seems to be an unnatural prejudice against them – like they can’t POSSIBLY be as good as non-scifi shows! They’re just for young teenage boys that like to see lasers go pewpew! What they don’t seem to realize is that some scifi shows have better writing, better acting, a better score, better cinematography, better special effects, and just all-around better quality than some non-scifi shows, and I would count both BSG and Caprica in that category next to Lost, which has ridiculously taken the prize from BSG on many occasions where it was completely unwarranted (oh! the smoke monster was more impressive than millions of cylon bodies being sucked into space as Vipers and Raptors strafe the resurrection ship viewports? That makes sense. Oh, the repetitive and contrived “death” theme from Lost is nominated but Bear’s choral work on BSG isn’t? That makes sense).

  18. VeganDirtEater Says:

So far, this has been my favorite episode of the series. CB2001, you’re right about a change in the opening credits. Right after Daniel Graystone is shown, we now see an assembly line of dozens of Cylons. And I agree that focusing on the Adama story was a good move. I thought the Wee Willy bad attitude was a bit overplayed or overwritten. That kind of behavior may be too common among kids who will always be losers, but the strength of character needed to guide the Fleet seems too deeply buried at this point.

I think the writers missed a character’s name by one letter. “Chiron” is the name of the white-suited older gamer who gets ripped-off. “Charon” was the name of the boatman in Greek mythology who guided souls across the Styx. Coins were paid to Charon for the passage, similar to the real-world funeral service happening while Chiron’s loot, a fountain of gold coins, is being snatched. Tamara watches as her friend speculates on the meaning of it all. If it were Charon’s coins, perhaps those V-world dead would be coming back to life (as pure avatars).

  19. Kirsty Says:

hahah Brian, your hilarious. I used to rant like that about Smallville. It used to make me want to bash my skull in, especially when they keep getting renewed for another season.
Personally I like lost *ducks for cover. But it’s a completely different kind of show and I don’t think it makes sense to compare shows like Lost and BSG together. I agree BSG kick way more ass than lost but lost does have great stuff about it, just in a different context…. wait a minute why are we talking about Lost?? This is Caprica!!!! hahaha

I liked this episode but for some reason it didn’t have any lasting resonance for me. After the episode was over I forgot all about it. I don’t really care about the characters yet I guess.

  20. Brian Says:

    @Kirsty

Oh, I don’t deny that Lost was pretty cool in its first two or three seasons. But after that, the writers either killed off or completely ruined all of the interesting characters (Echo, old Sawyer, old Locke, old Kate), which is one of the unforgivable sins of writing. I can forgive Caprica for not having characters as strongly defined yet, but that’s because we’re only four episodes in. Lost doesn’t have that excuse at all. And really, I will continue to watch this show even if it jumps the shark horribly next episode, because the music will (probably) continue to be unbelievably fantastic. The Tauron theme really is one of my favorites of all time.

  21. Kirsty Says:

I agree, so far I loooove the Tauran theme. Even with the small snippets we’ve seen they seem to have a very rich and semi tribal culture going on. I really like it and I hope they keep really developing the Tauran culture so we can get into that world.

  22. Josh Says:

Loved the episode! here’s my review:

    PROS: Tamara/V-World
    Willy kicking ass
    Daniel/Cylon FRAKING AWESOMENESS!
Amanda not being a crazy bitch. hehe jk she’s cool

CONS: Willy Adama doesnt have blue eyes!
    Where’s Joseph’s LIGHTER????

  23. VeganDirtEater Says:

In the next to last scene, where Joseph runs out of breath chasing Tamara’s young friend, I would have loved to have heard Joseph mutter “I’ve got to quit smoking”.

@Patrick, regarding the similarity with the Matrix early shot. Yes, right after the police break down the door to #303 and yell at Trinity, we see the “HEART” O’ the city Hotel” sign. I would imagine that leaving out Zoe’s reaction was done to leave us guessing just how angry or disappointed Zoe is at this point. I would guess that Zoe will do pretty much anything to avoid being discovered.

@Josh: Joseph’s lighter is probably with his broken pencils (see Lay Down Your Burdens). That is, he may not have developed these habits or traditions yet. Regarding Brown-Eyed Willy, this has been noticed and discussed at length. I suggest that we go reverse-Occam’s razor and try to come up with the most complicated explanation imaginable.

  24. SewerRat Says:

I the spirit of the “reverse Occam’s razor”, i think Willy gets into trouble with Sam and gets sent to Butcher Bay where he has his eyes surgically shined for 20 packs of menthol cools!!

Loving this new series and the Capri-Casts.

  25. Tootie Says:

    Quite enjoyable episode.
Not sure how getting Zoe to Gemanon is going to figure in now.
Why does Same have to have his shirt off at a memorial service – just silly.
Loved the scene with Amanda and Daniel. They have an interesting relationship.
The way you have to fill in your own blanks with this show, that all questions aren’t answered, is definitely BSG-like…but I still don’t feel I care about the characters too much (UNLIKE BSG!). Tamara the most I guess.

Quirky observation: Yoda’s last words were”There is another sky……walker.” Meaning Leia, who could become the jedi knight-leader…meaning the same for Tamara. Which is what this episode was pointing to.

I want to hear people’s comments about this – which is the pivital question of the episode in my mind – Did Zoe choose to rip off her arm to make her father look good and make it appear cylons must follow commands (but that they are indeed sentient and think about them first), or was she not going to do it, but found in the end, she could not fight her programming? Yes, a look on her face after could have been highly revealing and RDM is choosing to keep his hand on this close for now.
I think the latter is more interesting. That the cylon is like Daniel says – sentient but will follow orders. For now anyway.
    Thoughts?

  26. JJ Says:

    Hey all!

Fun episode! I loved Noe-Tamara. I can’t wait untill she starts flying and taking out agents. lol. The p-51/viper straffing V-world caprica was pretty fun. I know I’d probably be one of those guys if I could log onto v-world. I couldn’t help but laugh during the boardroom scene when Daniel was making is point about the future of the company. The whole “…the sites are free…. they expect it to be free”. yeah. we do expect the web to be free, dont we?

@Josh – about the lighter. I think it could go a few ways….like 1) flashback to Shannon giving him the lighter. maybe like Admiral Adama had with his wife on his anniversaries. 2) the arguement we’ve heard that this william adama will die, joseph will remarry, have a new son with her, and she will give him the lighter.

    @Tootie – I didn’t realize that about the “…SKY” walker thing. nice!!

Question: If by 13, william would be a man and make his own decisions. I wonder if that also holds true for Tamara and other girls in Tauron culture, since she is 16.

  27. close2heaven Says:

    @Josh

About Joseph’s LIGHTER: in the BSG episode “The Hand of God” William Adama Says to Lee:”It belonged to your grandfather. My mother bought it for him when he was in law school. See the engraving on it? ” Lee says: “[Reading the name "Joseph Adama".] Yes I…can barely make it out… ”
OK, but wasn’t Joseph called ADAMS in his law school years? :) Thought he came up with the name ADAMA after the death of his wife and daughter…:)

  28. Brian Says:

    @close2heaven

They can still pull it off within bounds of continuity as long as they bring up the lighter as though Willy had seen it before…or as long as Joseph says where he got it (it is conceivable that he’s had it all this time and has just failed to tell Willy about it).

Really, guys, I’m looking forward to the Romo Lampkin intern more than the lighter. :P

  29. Nanji Says:

I don’t know if anyone agrees with me that this episode was the best so far also because there was no room for Sister Clarice or Lacy?
I think that from the main characters that were introduced until now they are worst written. Every time there is a scene with one of them i’m just getting bored, even if the story is being pushed forward. Or maybe the actress are just not getting to me, but right now i just don’t like those characters.

The virtual part was awesome, the last scene with Tamara walking down the road – priceless. Loved the idea of teenagers (mostly) living as old style gangsters. And i liked the concept that you can’t get back to the game after you were taken out.

The last thing that was great for me was the change of Joe. First he was not able to agree with his loss, then we see him smiling (at last) after the ritual. And when he finally is at peace his world is shattered again. Great episode for me, best for now.

  30. Crispin Says:

I liked the episode – most of it, that is, but I have to say that the character of Daniel died in my eyes – and I think some problems with the show’s logic have crept up.
Last episode we saw him doing this rather generous thing of promising to make no further profit on the holobands, and even in this episode, he comes to the board meeting and goes on and on about how the Cylons are more than mere AIs, that they are in fact sentient and are able to feel…
…And then he pretty much says: “jolly good to have tese chaps, isn’t it? Really great that we have just created another race, right? So let’s ENSLAVE it.” Honestly, what’s wrong with Daniel Graystone? Not that such a plan seems completely infeasible in business, I guess there are people who would do such a thing, but I would not have put Daniel among those people before. Also: Since in the end he only wanted to sell a cheap, reliable worker to his board of directors, why does it matter, that they can feel? Why does he tell them? Isn’t the fact, that they can feel, in itself kind of a degradation of their worth as the perfect labourers? Wouldn’t businessmen see that kind of thing as a flaw in the programming, a kink to be worked out before turning them lose? The long hesitation of the Cylon before ripping its arm off should have been enough to think about a serious reprogramming.
So far I had always thought that the Colonials had been unaware of the Cylons’ true potential and had underestimated them until it was too late, but Daniel just told us that he, in fact, already knows about the complex inner workings of “his” creation.
That rant aside, I really enjoyed the episode, I guess I would just have been far more happy if for now the colonials would still think of the Cylons as machines that follow orders. I think the writers introduced the issues of race and slavery too early (not into the show, but into the conscience of Caprican society), but that’s just my two cents. I wonder whether we will see Daniel continuing on this very ruthless path.

  31. Brian Says:

That’s true, Crispin. I actually forgot to mention that in my post…how it seemed out of place for him to be talking about sentience. It would have made a stronger case if he were to simply say “these machines will never get tired, never get sick, will never need insurance or housing. It is the perfect tool.” He should have left sentience and race issues completely out of it. The arm-ripping would have made a more dramatic and effective impact had he stuck to that. Nonetheless, we knew these issues were going to crop up sooner or later. And besides, perhaps it’s hard to ignore the possibility of sentience when this robot appears to be just that. Surely Daniel and his team would have noticed by now that Zoe is doing things that she was definitely not programmed to do. I dunno…we’ll have to see how this pans out.

  32. SewerRat Says:

I like the use of the matrix style V-world as a kind of gaming platform “gone wrong”. It feels like an extension of the criticism most games get these days for being too realistic and warping the kids “fragile little minds”. Also the fact that no matter who or how powerful the person doing the coding is, there is always someone to hack it.

Whilst it would be a pure rip-off of The Matrix, what i was thinking would be a cool twist is if the colonies actually lost the coming Cylon war and somehow all the survivng humans were “imprisoned” in the V-world for their “own good” by the “machines” as it were. Then, the whole BSG series right up to our present day could all be played as a fantasy of our minds imprisoned in the Caprican v-world.

Could explain the “avatar” Baltar and Cap-6, Starbuck etc..

  33. Kirsty Says:

@Crispin & Brian – I think the reason Daniel was talking about it as sentience is to make it more human and thus more comfortable for humans to be around. To personalize it, so that the humans who purchased one would become attached to it and or want to buy it when they may not otherwise want too. Hence the reason so many people buy pets that look like themselves, or find animals that have human hands like beavers to be so adoreable. They look at the pet or machine and see themselves, then can identify with it and get attached. For a buisness person and from a purley profit standpoint they would see it as a very good thing. Because they know humans will get attached to them if they can see them as almost alive. Just like the way Daniel see’s his little house robot as almost a butler and speaks to it as such. Daniel probably doesn’t realllllly think it’s alive, but it’s more the point he’s trying to make, that it “feels” alive. I think daniel is presenting it as alive to make a point, and to make up for the 60% profit loss by no longer capitalizing on the Holoband. I don’t think he’s being cruel and sadistic, I think he’s thinking like a buisness person and not realizing the real “truth” of what he’s saying.
    Just my take on it.

  34. Tiberius1111 Says:

I agree with the general consensus. This was, in my opinion, the best episode so far with some great new developments.

@Crispin, I really liked your comments about Daniel Graystone and his seeming ambivalence toward the sentience and complexity he feels inside U-87. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the demonstration scene in the boardroom and the inspirational background speech that Amanda gave to him the night before.

I also thought V-Tamara’s “awakening” was very well done – and a natural consequence of her trapped existence following the revelation of her physical death. Her Tauron heritage is definitely starting to assert itself. Moreover, V-World shows the worst side of humanity and is V-Tamara’s only exposure to people. When her avatar is *eventually* downloaded into a cylon body, I would expect her hatred for humanity to be well ingrained. The seeds of retribution have been sown.

Leoben’s words “Adama is a cylon” are becomming hauntingly prophetic.

  35. gilad Says:

Tiberius1111, when did Leoben say that?

  36. Tiberius1111 Says:

@gilad, to answer your question, Leoben whispered “Adama is a cylon” to Roslin during his interrogation on board the freighter Gemenon Traveler in the BSG episode “Flesh and Bone”.

  37. gilad Says:

    Thank you Tiberius1111 :)
Now I remember that. That would make sense now with the Tamara storyline.

  38. neonMRhyde Says:

This episode was much better than the last three, I think we might be seeing how the end was near….. did any inspect for me laughed little when David Graystone did that speech about the how the cylons be slaves and they well do anything we want them to do….I be laughing if some said to David Graystone “I told you so.”

V-Tamara story line was great some reason it didn’t remind me of the matrix (1999-2003) but more like the film the dark city, (1998) and some reason I can see V-Tamara becoming the goddess of V-world but I agree with Tiberius1111 that when she her avatar is *eventually* downloaded into a cylon body, I would expect her hatred for humanity to be well ingrained. She could be the cylon in which started the first war and the grandmother of John Cavil (Number One).

@Tiberius1111 I don’t think Leoben knew V-Tamara (or C-Tamara) ? or but it was a way to create un-trust between Adama and Roslin

  39. Nanji Says:

V-world story also didn’t remind of Matrix, but of “Labyrinth of Reflections”, a book by Sergey Lukyanenko (that probably nobody but me knows :) )

  40. Brendan Says:

STOP WATCHING THE SNEAK PEEKS IF THEY DIMINISH THE EPISODE.

    Simple.

  41. gilad Says:

1- great review!! really liked it, good job :)
2- Ben Stark has an avatar? what?? how?? since when?!

  42. Kassandra of Troy Says:

    Hi All,
I loved this epi, and if BSG fans were hesitant, now is the time to begin watching. Oh, and can I say again how hot Sam is? Plus, he’s always taking that shirt off too–mmm.

I also wanted to comment on the lack of accolades for BSG–Jamie Bamber, Katie Sackhoff, dad and mom adama, Tigh? ROBBED!! Especially Jamie and Katie, they had so many scenes where they did not even speak together and apart, and you knew exactly what was going on. Well, I’m not even going to single them out; even Ellen, OMG. Boomer, when she shoots Adama, snaps back into Boomer and starts screaming because she has no idea what she has done, and that she’s done it. So important–that moment was pivotal to how the feelings of the 5, and those who were trying to understand Kara’s rebirth so to speak, Lee asking his father “If Zak had gotten off that ship would you have cared?”and Anders: “What if I lose it and turn on my own?”. It defined the human/cylon relationship discussed on the show, and what is it to be human? Regular TV is simpler, and often if you’re pretty and cute, and have a decent storyline you’ll get an award; thus taking it away from the greats.

Okay back on topic: So sorry, anyway this show had several key and amazing moments:
Joe getting his ass kicked back into shape by his brother; because he is no longer “seeing” Willie.
It was sad and wonderful to see how finally Joe was able to grieve with Willie during that ceremony. He hadn’t done it yet, I don’t think Daniel had either until after he went on that TV show.
We even see Joe smiling and laughing as if the acceptance had lifted this burden, until Tamara’s soon to be boyfriend (you know he’s going to fall in love w/a dead girl), ruins the whole thing.

    The Graystones:
They have a great relationship, a wonderful one and they really love each other. In fact their relationship as a couple, is the only healthy one we have seen in these series. The unhealthy part: they were unable to understand their daughter. Daniel adored her, as as Joe did Tamara, they were both Daddy’s girls, but he couldn’t even understand what was happening in VR world, so he was not seeing her either. Amanda; was crushed she did not know her daughter, because all they did was fight, and about the wrong thing–her being too spoiled. In fact she probably will never understand and is accepting the fact she did not know her daughter at all. But I think that it was Zoey in her brilliance who saw that her parents did not get her, and maybe would never,so she went to a place where she would be understood and be part of a “family”. She was older than she seemed, and definitely special.

The beginning of the end: when Daniel walks into that meeting w/Zoe/cylon. She is looking at him adoringly, like a little girl worshipping her Daddy, so proud, she was even dressed like one: pale blue puffy sleeves, pintucked dress–nothing like what she wore for the dance. I like how she changes that way, it shows how she’s there, and in VR because she can make those changes.

I do not think the Zoe we saw actually ripped off her arm–essentially she controls the cylon–I’m not sure if she hides it when she’s w/her Dad or she’s actually being controlled. I thought she made the robot rip off its’ arm. Thus the question of the soul comes up again, and we know, no other cylon can do what this one can because ZOE is in it w/that chip he got Joe to steal for him via Sam’s killing that guy. We see her making adjustments so she and Lacy can meet, we see her in her room, and we saw her make a phone call. Whomever figures out how to make those cylons do it w/out a Zoe, or maybe somehow she does it; doomed humanity.

I was heartbroken when I saw Daniel stand by that window, looking at that gorgeous view, talking about creating another race that would do whatever they wanted them to do. He proved it by Zoe doing as he wanted; but what if she had fully absorbed what was happening, instead of looking adoringly at her dad? What we do know, is that was the moment the end had begun, and it was at that second, all the suffering and pain we saw on BSG, came to pass.

Tamara–no longer a scared little girl. She can get shot and heal–kinda like downloading. I didn’t see her control VR world, I have to watch again. But she is a smart cookie, as she knows not dying makes her Queen Bee of VR world, but she still wants to see her Dad. My two fave moments were when the blonde chick who said she could get her to the outside world, told her that she could not help her, because she was DEAD. Tamara shoots them all in response, finally realizing who she is–and when that gangster woman says to her “what are you” and she says “Awake” and shoots her again–that said it all. I said this on my LJ, but the sexy swagger at the end, reminded me of none other than our favorite Head 6, swaggering around in the red dress.

I really, really, hope we see Lacy more in VR w/Zoey, Tamara and co.. Plus I really want someone to show us how Polly Walker went all Soldier of the One, decided to recruit at school, and breed a suicide bomber. Something or someone must have made her turn from the gods,to the One True God. She’ll never get what she wants out of Lacy, as she is becoming stronger through her ship w/the “new” Zoe. So that storyline needs to change.

Sorry for so much, but after last week, I am in love w/this show! I’m excited as I loved BSG even if the finale was disappointing, it was some of the best TV that I have ever watched.

Mat & Nat didn’t mention it in their review, and I don’t see any mention of it in the comments, but one of my favourite parts of the episode was what I took to be an early Battlestar and Vipers that attacked Tamara and the other kid when they were on the balcony in New Cap City (I agree with Matt about the name …).

That did a lot to address the lack of spaceship battles which Caprica’s been suffering from so far ;)

  44. Boki Says:

I loved Tamara in New Cap City. That moment where she get Heracles to duck-down behind her to shield him from the bullets recalled the moment Caprica Six protects Gaius Baltar from the shattering glass in his house during the Cylon attack. Nice bit of fore-shadowing I think. A sure sign we’re meant to read Tamara as the precursor to the Cylons.

Ok my friend and I watched this episode together and he and I came up with an awesome theory. Right before Tamara kills the underground chief blond lady, she says, “I’m free” So here’s our theory, what if somehow in the series Daniel Graystone combines Zoe’s avatar and Tamara’s avatar and from there he makes clones of the hybrid avatar and that’s who all the future cylons are. Here’s why: Zoes avatar explains the Cylons dedication to one god, and Tamaras avatar explains in season 4 of BSG when the Cylons were given free will, why they went beserk and killed a bunch of skin-jobs (like Tamara going beserk and killing a bunch of people in the V-world). Also, I watched the pilot episode of Caprica last week and I don’t remember any reference to Ben Stark having an avatar, I thought Zoe was the only one with one, then Daniel created Tamara, so there’s only two at this point. Oh and I stopped watching previews for any tv show after BSG ended, because the previews for me ruined the last 4 or so episodes of BSG, because I watched the preview and was expecting one kind of episode, then got a completely different one. So simple solution, everyone stop watching previews, they ruin episodes and give you a different impression of them.

  46. Teresa Jusino Says:

Yeah, great review you guys – but Ben Stark wouldn’t have an avatar. The only reason Zoe and Tamara have one is because they were specially-created as separate entities from the regular avatars that would appear if the girls were just wearing holobands. Ben wasn’t wearing his holoband when he died, nor did he have a separate avatar made of him. So there’s no reason to expect that there’s a Ben Stark still in V-world.

And while I agree that the Sister Clarisse storyline has been slow-going, I disagree with your feelings about Lacy! I love her character, and am looking forward to seeing how she evolves. She’s the heart of the show in so many ways.
