CapriCast 1.06 – Know Thy Enemy

The sins of the Caprica pilot seem to be catching up with Daniel as his industrial nemesis from Vergis corporation brings Adama’s theft and murder down on Graystone Industries. If that wasn’t enough, Spike himself, James Marsters, makes his debut on the series with this episode, and it’s anyone guess what direction that could take!

Suggestion: stop watching the preview scenes. I keep hearing people (including Matt & Nat) complain that they spoil the episodes. I just assumed they would and have never watched them to avoid that outcome, and I’m glad that I have as I’ve not had that problem at all. I know it takes a little bit of self control to not watch scenes when you’re craving new Caprica, but it’s worth it in the end. Trust me.

  2. Brian D. Says:

I agree, Bald. In my opinion, these preview scenes are a stupid idea, especially if they give away major plot lines. The thirty second commercial preview is all that I need to get me psyched for a new episode.

  3. CB2001 Says:

First off, I am surprised we actually get a chance to see a 12 Colony planet OTHER than Caprica and not related to “The Plan.” Getting a chance to see Tauron (not as dirty as it was described) and the Virgis Corporation was a big of an odd thing. I actually suspect that it wasn’t Sam and the mob he’s with that killed Virgis’ men (by the way it seems, maybe another mob? I mean, after all, in the real world, back during the Great Depression, there wasn’t just one “mob”, there were multiple groups of “mobs”, like there are multiple groups of gangs in our current time).

I will say, this episode has a lot of interesting things going on with it. Virgis (his attempt to buy the Bucks, “paint himself Caprican”, his tattoos and how he’s responsible, for a lot of children). Clarice (her practically manipulating Amanda to get close to Daniel’s computer to snag the info. I’ve got a feeling she’s getting close to finding the Zoey A.I. And for some reason, it scares the hell out of me and makes me hope Daniel figures out the truth about the U-87 before she finds her). Daniel (and the fact that he is realizing how much better Virgis is at portraying himself, which in comparison to Graystone two weeks ago, appears more confident and has the ability to BS a lot more than Daniel ever could). And of course, the Zoey-A.I. (she decides to play the role of “Rachel” for the lab tech. How would he react when she finally reveals that she is an A.I. copy of Zoey Graystone?)

We did get some new details that seem interesting. For one, there’s “Scorpian Ambrosia” (turns out there are two types of Ambrosia now, which you can tell by the two bottles of green liquid, one of them much darker than the other). There’s a new word to add to the dictionary of Caprica: “Tarse.” (and apparently, guys ten to think with it a lot more than they do their head). And I am sensing a bit of a budding romance between Joseph Adama and Evelyn during the tattoo scene (am I really seeing this or am I just imagining things?). Not only that, I laughed at the BSG version of “eHarmony” (or in short, the BSG version of the typical dating sites that are out, including eHarmony).

This may not be a better episode compared to last week’s, but there’s a LOT of interesting things that are showing up in this show, and I think the ball is rolling down hill and gaining some speed. This is of course, just me. I could very well be wrong.

  4. Cylon-Scout Says:

I agree with CB2001 Caprica is gaining some speed. I enjoy every new episode. And just like BSG before it leaves me wanting more.

Lots of angles to Frak your mind, this week.

  5. CB2001 Says:

BTW, for next week’s episode preview, I swear, it looks like a Viper Mark II shown. I could be wrong.

  6. Chris Says:

Cool episode. Liked the virgis arc. It’s also interesting to see the bright colours and peaceful scenery during Graystone’s party…we didn’t see too much of that in BSG or Caprica so far. The scene with Joseph and Daniel/Virtual Daniel was really interesting…nice transition. And when he was cutting the veggies and thinking about the people who died, I thought he was going to end up cutting himself. I also liked the scene with Clarice and Amanda getting drunk and then Clarice uploading info from Daniel’s computer. =) She’s really manipulative. And yeah for James Marsters. =)

The one thing I was a bit off about was why Zoe chose herself as an avatar to meet with the kid…?

  7. Kirsty Says:

I liked this episode. I agree with bald jason and brian that people should stop watching the previews if they are ruining the episodes. I think I have to stop watching them now. The episode seemed quite predictable because of the sneak peaks and stuff.

I loved the opus day flash of barnubus wrapping the barbed wire around his arms. Foreshadowing the coming one god extreemist reign of terror.
I liked the discussion clarice and her husbands were having about creating bodies for a tangible afterlife etc… so they could all live on. Because I can’t stop thinking of how much Clarice looks like a slightly older or maybe just slightly different version of Lucy lawless. I could see d’anna being the future model of Clarice. And now we know how they make many copies of one model. They can make dozens or even millions of Zoe’s with that one copying device.

I don’t believe that Sam killed the two men who worked at virgis corp, unless of course Sam didn’t know Virgis was a Tauran. But the way there was flashes of the murder when daniel was thinking about it it’s possible he did it himself, although I find that highly unlikely. It just struck me as odd. Zoe’s boyfriend looked Tauran. I could see him working for sam and getting the chip. Then realizing it’s for some greater destiny and killing the two men for it. (what was her boyfriends name again) Anyways, just a guess.

  8. thee_immortal_one Says:

    Just another conspiracy theory….
Joseph’s assistant is working for Vergis and will probably lay an inter-taurin clan war. How else would the assistant know what “good” ink looked like. Billy will have to be given over to the warrior Spartan clan now known as the colonial warriors as payment for transgression.

By the way (BTW), what corporation was Adama interviewing for in BSG when he was asked in he ever stole anything.

Zoey’s clothes change when the chasis of the cylon changes. This is an illusion to the eventual conversion of the cylon from robot to killing machine.

  9. Bacchus Magnus Says:

I haven’t read all the previous posts, so if someone mentioned this before, I’m really sorry. I had a revelation in the shower this morning (maybe from being in a stream of water). I believe the “data stream” Cylons use on board the Basestars is a latter incarnation of “V World”. I also believe their ability to “project” is result of their being linked to the “data stream”.

  10. CB2001 Says:

Kristy- Clarice didn’t upload any information. The device that she was using was meant to make a copy of the information on the computer Daniel Graystone was using. Since he announced that he had Zoey’s Avatar, and the SOTO knew what the Avatar really was, they were trying to make a copy of it. But, Clarice failed at her mission of trying to copy the Zoey Avatar, as she was one computer over from the right one.

  11. Teresa Jusino Says:

@Chris – she can’t choose what she looks like, because she only exists as an avatar. She can change her clothes, but she only exists as an avatar of Zoe, so if she wants to interact with Philamon more physically – which she clearly does! – she has to do it as herself.

@thee_immortal_one – interesting theory about Joseph’s assistant. Except that if she’s Tauron, she would know what good ink looks like just by being in the culture. Remember that ALL Taurons get tattooed, not just the gangsters and whatnot.

I thought this ep was a bit slow – lots of walking down long hallways. But it revealed a lot of important character development for Daniel and moved the plot along significantly. I also love the love stories beginning to blossom. Philamon and Zoe – AND Joseph and his assistant. She clearly wants to be all up on him. Meanwhile, he’s all “Um, my wife just died.” THAT should be interesting.

  12. Kirsty Says:

@ CB2001 – I never said she uploaded information, I said she copied it. Haha We said the exact same thing ;)

  13. Mr. Lovejoy Says:

Hi guys, for me it was a pretty boring episode. I like Caprica to be more like New Cap City and less like the family drama, hmmmm. maybe just refusing to let go of a certain military drama I love. I was also a bit dissapponted with James Marsters as Matt was probably too. They have a great actor there but then they barely use him. His arm in barbwire was cool but spike can do a lot more than sit there and glare and say no. Daniel and Vergis, don’t care, so he has an enemy who wants to ruin him, get in line Tauren guy. I liked the Zoe date, it was cute and nice to see hear enjoy herself again. Clarie and her failed attempt to copy Zoe’s avatar, though I do find it interesting that she seemed so disgusted with the robots, as that is what the Cylons become, she is not yet aware that that is the future she thinks she is fighting for. Yes the seven and the five will have human-like bodies but there will be millions and millions of Centurians first. I wish sometimes I felt more compassion for Clarice but she just seems to be a drug addict with a vision. Anyway, next week, back to New Cap(yay!) and More Tamara!
    Rolling the hard six,
    Timmy

  14. VeganDirtEater Says:

For me, this was one of the weaker and less interesting episodes. Too much focus on bad guy vs bad guy snarling, with too few brief scenes which were actually enjoyable to watch. The V-date scene was cute, especially Zoe’s reaction to “the girl had principles”.

I liked the bit where Joseph begins to open up a brand new holoband, looking around furtively as he begins his struggle with the packaging which eventually requires a claw hammer.

There was either a major plot point introduced rather subtly or perhaps just a lapse in continuity. Early on we see a U-87 standing in the middle of the holoband scanner in the Graystone basement lab. Zoe is wearing a silver-metallic dress. Next we see a U-87 in the lab where Philo is working and Zoe is wearing the daddy’s girl blue cloth dress. Daniel orders Philo to “reexamine the left arm solenoid”. Then when Clarice visits Amanda, the U-87 is back at the scanner with Zoe in the silver dress. And when Zoe makes the V-date, she’s back in the big lab with the blue dress. This lab appears to be the one at Graystone Industries, not the one at the Graystone residence. It now appears that there are at least two U-87s. The one at the residence always has two arms. The one at the lab gets its left arm taken off (damaged recently?) and put on the examining table. If true, does two U-87s imply two Zoes, and if so, are they aware of one another?

If we see too many episodes like this, this series will die. For me, Daniel has already jumped the shark on evil, with his speech before the board about creating a race of slaves. There is nothing bad or good which could happen to him which would have any interest for me at this point. Tom Vergis’ grandiose plan for revenge is a ridiculous waste of time and energy. And boring. And wasting the talent of James Marsters to just say no stimulated only a need for more coffee. Yawn.

In BSG(Hero), William Adama’s mother’s name is revealed as Evelyn. When the BSG miniseries was shown in 2003, EJO (and presumably his character) was about 56 years old. Since The Fall is 58 years in present-day Caprica’s future, this gives about the right amount of time for Joseph and Evelyn to produce a blue-eyed Willy. It looks like it’s time for brown-eyed Willy to die soon. Perhaps at the end of this half-season. One can only hope. Thus ends the pen clicking.

  15. racheltng Says:

This show has me hook, line, and sinker. I always so sad to read the posts from the BSG fans who don’t like it. Yes, it’s not a military/action drama. But it’s still a quality show written by talented people. There’s so little of that on television these days. On the the episode. I, too, would have liked to have seen more of James Marsters, but I wasn’t disappointed by his appearance because I saw it as a teaser for future episodes.

Also, I have to echo what Bald_Jason74 and Brian D. said. If you find that the episodes aren’t enough of a full meal, stop watching the preview clips. Going in unspoiled really changes the experience for the better.

  16. Crispin Says:

@VeganDirtEater: Have to agree with you regarding Daniel.
However, I’m not conviced Virgis really told Daniel the truth about his plan. If he just wanted to buy the C-Bucks to ruin them or lead them to victory, he wouldn’t need to play the Caprican audience as well as he did. Nor does he need citizenship. When Daniel said “I know what he’s doing”, I started on my own theories. I’m pretty sure Virgis is going to run for office, now that his company’s biggest chance for success has been taken away from him. That’s why he’s building public opinion – going on Sarno and buying the Buccaneers are both means to that end. I think we might see something like a Congressman Virgis and with his expertise and backing in the military supplies industries he might easily get a spot on the military appropriations board, putting him in an important position regarding the CYLON project and making him Daniel’s de facto boss.

I’m also confused about the U87, but that started a couple episodes back when a military prototype seemed to have no problem of breaking out of a lab and quickly jogging over to her former BFF’s house before returning – all without being noticed…

Good catch about Evelyn. Willie is definetely too old to accept his father’s new wife as his new “mother”, so it seems like there really are two William Adamas. Also, Adama said that he was still in school when the war started – and Willie I. is already playing truant like crazy and will probably not go to school for more than two further years – let alone go to college.

  17. Cylon-Scout Says:

Why is there so many of you hung up on the fact that Willie’s Blue eyes vs Brown eyes. Did you ever think that it was a mistake, a continuity problem they simply hired an actor with blue eyes big deal. All they needed to do is hire an actor who could pass for Joseph Adams (Esai’s) Kid and I think he does, not to mention anyone can change their eye colour with contacts aftar all we see Adama wear glasses. I’m just not convinced yet that the eye colour has anything to do with the story….

  18. Floydian42 Says:

Just have to say, Sam’s my favorite character thus far in the series, but Vergis, man is he a contender. You sympathize with Daniel coz’ you’ve been with him so long, and have been rooting for him, but at the end of the day, stealing from the other corporation was wrong, and he is responsible for the death of two Vergis men. On the other end of the stick, Vergis is just completely evil, his entire goal to ruin Daniel? Genius. Because he’s certainly morally wrong, but then again, two of his people died. He could easily just take Daniel to court, but hey, blackmail’s good business.

Anywho, great episode, can’t wait for next week!

(P.S. U87 Zoe is really cute. Getting to talk to the lab tech through the eharmony service, it’s just adorable. In a very sick, twisted, and nerdy way.)

  19. Patrick Says:

Boring, boring, boring… am I the only one who is concerned that there are too many weak story lines? (and based on how BSG ended, there is no certainly that all of the story lines will even be resolved well (gods be w/ Starbuck!)).

and the kids… did RDM make a big mistake in using “high school” aged kids instead of more adult “college” aged kids? the whole Zoe / lab-geek thing is a total loss, as is Claris and the bike-shop kids… too much Caprica 90210 crap…

still see no reason for Little Willie or even having to use “The Adamas” (what is special about them as opposed to just any other family AT THIS TIME?) – does RDM really need to paint himself self into some kind of corner re: Little Willie and Joseph and the have a BIG REVEAL re: an as yet unknown aspect of “the canon”…

c’mon – tighten up the plot, and , as I said before, box(ey) as many of the kids as poss!

  20. VeganDirtEater Says:

One important point if there’s to be a Willy-switch. Blue-eyed Willy will only be about 17 or 18 when the Cylon war ends. “Husker” as shown in Razor will have to be like the real-life George H.W. Bush who was at one time the youngest Naval Aviator. But it’s hard to believe a 17 year old kid have a deep enough voice to be called Husker. The actor who portrayed 29 year old Husker in Razor has brown eyes and wore blue contacts, as did Edward James Olmos. BSG thus made a big deal about the blue eyes, so it’s a big deal. If the Caprica people thought otherwise, they thought wrong. Oh wait, the Caprica people are the BSG people. So they have no one to blame but themselves if this is just a continuity screw-up.

I’m also swearing off the sneak-peaks. It’s one thing to show a non-critical tease, but when major plot points are revealed (as they have been several times), the sneak peaks really do diminish the enjoyability of the show.

Looking forward to more Tamara, less Clarice.

And since at least part of this fan-base enjoys Science Fiction, why not give a hint of how they get around between planets. Using our own current technology, it takes months to get from Earth to Mars, but it seems that going from Tauron to Caprica is something like going from Paris to Chicago. They must have some early form of FTL capability, so why not show this and leave the scenes of a stoned-out Clarice on the cutting room floor?

@Crispin: Vergis having a more deeply hidden motive would be cool and interesting. Simple revenge at this point is just more boredom.

Here’s hoping this series picks back up soon.

  21. Kirsty Says:

Even though a lot of people are saying that this was a boring episode and there are a lot of weak story lines, and to some extent I agree. I still love getting into the world of the 12 colonies. The rich Tauran culture is fascinating. They always seem so bad-ass.

I completely agree with Cylon_scout, the whole blue eyed Willie thing was most likely a mistake and the only reason any of us are noticing it is because we’re hardcore bsg nerds haha that’s it. It’s such a small minuscule detail not really worthy of all the conspiracy talk in my opinion.

@vegandirteater I think they simply have regular transport ships to get from planet to planet. Kind of like us taking planes to different countries. That’s why they have passports etc… But I don’t know if they have jumps or not. I know in “The Plan” Tori was talking about the hourly jump transports to delphi city. But I don’t know about 58 years before that.

  22. VeganDirtEater Says:

@Kirsty: “I think they simply have regular transport ships to get from planet to planet. Kind of like us taking planes to different countries.” Yes and Yes; That is precisely my point.

Interplanetary travel is semi-routine for them. Using any kind of non-FTL system would take months, not hours. Even an advanced ion drive would only shorten a nearby planet to planet trip from months to weeks. By the way, Tori was in Delphi on Caprica so she was making a normal trip city to city on the same planet.

Only some of the twelve colonies are in the same star system as Caprica. One of these is Gemenon, which may even share Caprica’s orbit (if Serge can be believed). Some of the other colonies are in nearby star systems, at least hundreds if not thousands of AU away. No one is going to travel distances like this routinely without some kind of jump/warp/hyperdrive what-have-you method of traveling astronomical distances in short amounts of time.

My reason for bringing this up is that at least some of us would much prefer seeing a Tauron to Caprica jump than a four-way bed scene. Or Amanda getting drunk and letting creepy Clarice have her way in the basement lab. Doesn’t industrial espionage exist in her world? Or was the business of grabbing the MCP something that had never happened before? I understand that this data grab was necessary for some future plot development, but that data grab shouldn’t have been so easy.

I looked carefully at the stack of five books Clarice was holding at the door. They had the corners cut on the side opposite the spine. But when Amanda places the stack on the table, these corners appear to be normal. Does Caprica even have a continuity person on staff?

Just before that, when Amanda says “Daniel has been programming all kinds of weird stuff into him lately”, I wonder if it’s really Daniel or Zoe. Zoe may be trying her hand at programming other robots. I would have loved it if Serge would have said something like, “I can see by your outfit that Hideous is coming back into fashion.” Weird stuff indeed.

  23. Brian Says:

This show is starting to overcome the weaker writing I believe it had early in its regular season run. Sure, there are still some things I could do without, but the story lines are really starting to get interesting (and are starting to move along, too). Virgis and his last scene with Daniel was brilliant in so many ways. There’s irony left and right, and you’re left not sure who to root for. And then there’s the simple fact that Virgis was kind of a badass. You can really see where he’s coming from, and the best part is that he comes out and declares his intentions right at Daniel’s face. If nothing else, you gotta give him credit for standing up and taking responsibility for his actions.

At first it seemed a little silly, but I’m tentatively curious about the Zoe/Assistant thing. More specifically, I like the potential that exists for many of the characters to have complex relationships that involve both V-World and the real world (and the barriers that exist between them). And amusingly enough, while Zoe was the weak link in the pilot (IMO), she’s really starting to grow on me.

Nice to see Joe back in his form. I wasn’t a big fan of hung-up, head-in-the-clouds Joe. Now he’s back to obsessively chasing his dead daughter through virtual reality – as it should be. :D

Even Sister Clarice, who I have found to be rather bland and even useless, was part of an interesting little side plot. Suddenly characters who have been very isolated in their arcs were thrust together here, which was a nice change of pace. Anyone notice that the Amanda theme and the Clarice theme meshed together really well? And wtf, did Zoe see Clarice do her thing? It wasn’t made very clear (at least for me).

    Looking forward to next week.

  24. Brian Says:

Contrary to the first few episodes, I actually found Amanda’s behavior believable. They had just taken most of Zoe’s things away, she had just been through being hated by the general public and being fired from her job…probably has very few friends. I would see it as only natural to jump at the chance to make a new one. There was also the common hatred for that investigator. It seemed surprisingly natural the way they hit it off. Then that led (believably) to drinking, which in turn leads to impaired judgement. I didn’t find it terribly forced how Clarice got in.

You do, however, have a point about the space travel. Would be nice to see that at some point. More than that, I dearly hope that this series gradually builds. Not just in the obvious way (military production – vipers, etc.), but also in general scope. The magnitude of certain story lines really hasn’t hit me yet. I look forward to the evolution of this show, and I hope, like you, that the inclusion of space elements is part of that.

  25. Cylon-Scout Says:

Thankyou Kristy I’m Glad someone out there has the same opinion over the whole blue eyed colour conspiracy.

  26. Tootie Says:

My only comment – pretty dull.
And, it was extremely silly for Virgis to openly threaten Graystone, the man he believes sent thugs to murder his men. That is, would he not be concerned that Graystone will also take him out? Yes. Yet somehow he considers himself immune to Graystone’s reach of violence? SILLY.

  27. Tootie Says:

Also, thy is you. Thine is your. So the Episode title should be “Know Thine Enemy”!!!

  28. Tootie Says:

Sorry, thy is the older form of thine. Thou is you. Sorry. I just like thine better!!! Just feeling a bit frustrated with the show. I’d like to see Lacy and her stoyline axed. I’d like to see Adama get defined. I agree that Daniel is not sympatheitc anymore. Had he talked about cylons serving humanity without sentience, that would be one thing…

  29. Maria Sunderland Says:

Not a bad episode, but I still don’t like Clarice. I see her point in the show, but somehow her character feels more like it’s spinning in circles and not going anywhere. In the pilot, she looked like a skilled, manipulative individual. It sent me chills when she told Lacy about her affiliation with STO, especially when she hugged Lacy. But it’s as though she lost that composed leadership she seemed to have. I gave her her chance, but now she just doesn’t fit in for me. I’ll have to put up with her for now, and maybe… MAYBE she’ll impress me. Same with Lacy. I find myself sighing and hoping for the next scene whenever I see her. There’s no attachment to that character at all.

@Bacchus Magnus : I had the same theory from the get go. It’s quite obvious, to me anyways, that the V World has an important part of Cylon “projection”.

Zoe’s attempt at contacting Philomon through the dating site was actually really sweet and interesting. I’m eager to see what will happen in that aspect… Although I felt Philomon fell for her “avatar” story a little too quickly. Makes you wonder…

According to the previews, next episode looks to be a good one, close or not on par with the episode of the previous week.

  30. VeganDirtEater Says:

@Tottie: You’re right about thy/thine but for the wrong reason. “Thine” would be the proper word choice since “Enemy” starts with a vowel. Otherwise thy and thine are equivalent parts of speech. Recall “Thine is the Kingdom” and “Mine eyes have seen the Glory”. Other languages such as Spanish, French, and Russian still distinguish the familiar/singular second person from the formal/plural second person, but English simplified things a few hundred years ago. Having said that, if the writers choose to use an older form of English, they could at least get it right. What’s next, “With this ring, I thou wed”? (Should be thee, since thee is the direct object).

Speaking of rings, I noticed that Sister Clarice’s bling was very prominently displayed as she and Amanda embrace. Her Eye of Jupiter Mandala ring was seen in the pilot, and has only been seen fleetingly since then. Something’s up.

@Maria: I think you’ve very accurately summed up the present state of Clarice’s character. Since she’s whatever the writers want her to be, I’m now wondering why they’ve so effectively made Clarice into such a mess. I’m hoping that this was done so Clarice can suddenly come back from “spinning in circles”. Lady Macbeth advised her husband to “look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under it”. When Clarice makes her comeback, she’ll still be deceivingly dull until it’s too later for her adversaries.

I’m still resisting looking at next week’s previews. I’d suggest to Matt and Nat to open up a discussion forum for next week’s episode if people want to comment on the previews.

  31. CB2001 Says:

Sorry, Kristy. That’ was meant to be for Chris (the response above yours.

  32. Nanji Says:

One question about Zoe’s date: How was she connected to the V-world? If i remember correctly last time when she was in the V-world with Lacy she was connecting with a computer or something like that and this time i don’t think she was attached to anything but the diagnostic computer.

  33. CB2001 Says:

Nanji- to answer the question, in one of the previous episodes, she modified the U-87 to allow for wireless connection to the Holoband, which in turn also allowed accessing the V-World

  34. kassandra of Troy Says:

I am so loving this show! I said this on syfy, but Zoe, girl, no you didn’t! How adorable was she? I love how the past 2 episodes show the side of Zoe we didn’t see before she died–ie. the one who admired her father, and now crushing on the adorable tech–so cute! Some have asked about her bf–he seems to be totally forgotten. But I say 2 things:
Zoe was 16, and young–who knows how much she was really into her BF
This Zoe, being as I see, is her soul in some form or another. I don’t get it; but it seems to make sense.
Does anyone remember how Zoe reacted to the sudden knowledge that she was going to die on that train? She DID NOT LOOK SCARED. She yelled “No!” like not now, this is the wrong time. It was not like a last scream of terror.

More on this ep–I do not think that Vergis will be finding any connection to the Ha’la’fa (sp?), ie. Sam & Joe. Just a note–I miss Sam when he’s not walking around 1/2 naked–he seems to really hate shirts. Sam said to Joe, I’ll worry about my job, and you worry about your job. Joe is not cut out for the mob life. Daniel is the one Vergis blames; even if he did get the mob to do his dirty work. Joe even tells him: you’d be dead by now if they knew you were involved. Vergis; feels that tearing down everything Daniel has created and loved, will kill him; it would be a fate worse than death. I wholeheartedly agree.

I have begun to think that this rivalry will be key to the path of why the cylons evolve and the first war began.

I also find it fascinating to see the young Joe Adama, as compared to the man we hear about in BSG. The way he was spoken of; it was as if he was a legend for his work. The comments on how Lee was much more like Joe, than his father is something that I hope we begin to see. As right now, would any of us have guessed that the mighty Adama was Tauron? That his uncle was an enforcer for the Tauron mob? That Joe got him off all the time? There is so much left to learn, and I hope we see enough seasons that we will see some of that character development. Someone mentioned Romo L., as he worked for Joe, and admired him. But Romo has not been born yet, so the young Joe we see, is not the man we know that Romo tells Lee all about at Baltar’s trial.

One thing that I will say, is that I have a feeling Joe is going to marry a Caprican woman; that one from SG-1 is dying to get her claws into him. Does anyone know if he did remarry? Perhaps that created even more of a rift between Joe and Willie.

Am I correct in thinking that the Greystones, Vergis and co. will see the monsters they created by living through the first cylon war? It’s probaby about 10 years in the future?

    That’s it for now
    k

  35. Kirsty Says:

I just realized, Virgis is played by the same guy who played stinger! Maybe everyone already noticed it but I thought it was cool haha

  36. racheltng Says:

@Kirsty, no I didn’t notice. Thanks for pointing that out!

  37. NeonMRhyde Says:

First let me say this Im sorry to others who don’t view this viewpoint so sorry.

!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS ISN’T BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, IF YOU JUDGE THIS SHOW TO BSG IT WILL MAKE YOU LESS ENJOY THE SHOW. (IN OTHER WORDS IT IS LIKE JUDGING STAR WARS 4,5,6 TO STAR WARS 1,2,3 OR JUDGING ORIGINAL BATTLESTAR GALACTICA TO THE NEW BATTLESTAR GALACTICA ) !!!!!!!!

Also to those who are not enjoying the show remember this is season 1 better know has the introduction season, if you actually remember season 1 of BSG wasn’t that good if I remember alot of people heated the idea of bring BSG back with a new cast and changing the characters, even Richard Hatch (Tom Zarek and the original Apollo) hated the idea how Fraking wrong was he, only till season 2 (or in my case season 3) began the show stared to be brilliant and start to be a show of it’s own. The same thing would go Caprica if it was able for future seasons like a season 2……and also Caprica isn’t BSG.

Also to those who think Willie Adama isn’t Bill Adama…….. there are 100 ways he could get his eyes changed also Adama could have lied to get into the war (look at our history in which a great war, did the soldiers tell the truth about about the age then, in others WW1 and the kids how died in the war to fight the Germans). It could be a mistake by the writers or just WAIT TO FIND OUT !!!!!! There are many things in Caprica and BSG which don’t connect and I can even give a list of things which don’t connect to Caprica to BSG like for example :-

Like why isn’t admiral Helena Cain ( who is Tauron) not being called names Earth eater behind her back.

Sorry for bitch for those who are enjoying the show and seeing a similar as I do and any1 I offended.

    Know the show :)

I loved the seen in which Joseph begins to open up a brand new holoband, looking around furtively as he begins his struggle with the packaging which eventually requires a claw hammer, this makes it human show not a big sci-fi show which everything is perfect. Also did any one noticed that James Marsters lost his english accent and tries to bring it back bit? But James Marsters is good and hope to see in future episode

Also in the scene in Joseph Adama is in V-word talking to V-Daniel did anyone see the red bar in the back like the cylon red bar on the base ship in BSG i wound if there is some connection to it or just something added for fun.

And the irony on Clarice Willow “Plan” I wound what she new that her Plan make the cylons human. Also it was interesting to see different Ambrosia.” And I am interested how budding romance between Joseph Adama and Evelyn will go in future episodes. If Joseph Adama and Evely got together, it be bad news for Evely to start a romantic relationship with Joseph Adama, when all the girls which Adama’s love die or this might be the first one might change, hopefully.

The scene with Tomas Vergis and Baxter Sarno on BACKTALK, felt like scenes in BSG with Baltar. Like the “Greatest mind of the 12 colonies (TV miniseries) and the music from the end of Colonial Day did anyone think this ?

  38. kassandra of Troy Says:

Were the previews that big of an issue on BSG? I don’t know, they just make me excited!

As to the question of comparisons of BSG and this show, I think that this show is much more dramatic, and heartbreaking by knowing what is to come, and what we saw on BSG. It is also an interesting commentary how by the 3rd generation, ie. Lee, Kara, Zak, how much the worlds had changed. We knew there were still the poor world’s, and the religious fanatics, but there was also a council that worked together.

If you were not as into BSG as some of us were, this show is still a good watch, but I’m sorry that moment w/Daniel and the Zoe/u-87 announcing the new race, who would walk beside them? but technically be slaves? Is heartbreaking—-just to see the exact moment it all began. It is why I am wondering if Daniel, and even Vergis live to see what they had created and what they had done to humanity.

Also, isn’t Baranabas the captain of the C-Bucks? I thought Willie talked to him in the pilot when Daniel brings him and Joseph to the game, and the locker rooms.

  39. Brian Says:

Woah there, Neon. I agree that this show should be judged on its own merits…but I’ve gotta say that all the other examples you cited are terrible examples. Star wars 1, 2, and 3 were just awful, awful movies…doesn’t matter if you compare them to the original trilogy or not. All you’ll realize there is that the original trilogy is better…but then, there are quite a few movies that are better than those turds. The old BSG (which I saw well before neo BSG) was god awful. And to be perfectly honest, there’s nothing wrong with comparing material to other material that comes from the same source and especially the same “universe.” I realize that Caprica is a different show fundamentally, but quality is quality.

Oh, and agreed about the holoband packaging. That was pretty good. Nice to know that infuriating plastic packaging existed millions of years ago, too. :P

  40. neonMRhyde Says:

Sorry……just since I have been readying Capricast everyone is not judge it on its own merits and judging it to BSG…… I will say the first few episode of Caprica wasn’t that good but since episode 4 the show as been getting much better. I m just getting tired of hearing its not good a BSG and judging to BSG standers, I think people want to know what it ends before it ever gets started.

  41. Alex Says:

Vergis isn´t the villain, in fact he is the good guy. The real villains are the Graystones and the Adamas, who stole the chip, killed the scientists and, indirectly, will wipe out the mankind.

  42. VeganDirtEater Says:

@NeonMRhyde: Regarding your sentence about Joseph’s struggle with the holoband, if you’re going to quote someone (like me) you should follow accepted citation protocol. Think double quotes. Plagiarism is uncool even in an informal forum such as this.

@Alex: You’re right about Vergis not being a villain, at least not yet. Other folks in other forums have openly stated that, but that “assumes facts not in evidence”. The Caprica writers seem to have reversed the usual roles of Protagonist/Antagonist being Good/Evil to Evil/Unknown. Good for them. I just wish that Daniel wasn’t so clearly such a butthead.

Looking forward to “Imperfections”. I hear that more action is involved, but I’m staying away from the sneak-peak spoilers.

  43. Bald_Jason74 Says:

I didn’t see anyone else mention this, but I for one found Clarice more interesting than ever before the minute she stepped into Amanda’s house. I laughed out loud at her reacations to Serge. Something about seeing Clarice in Amanda’s world and the two of them together…I don’t know. It raised my interest. I hope there will be more scenes between these women…these actresses and these characters in the future.

And while I’ve loved James Marsters on Buffy / Angel / Smallville / Torchwood I was sort of underwhelmed by his introduction here; I’m hoping to enjoy his casting more as his character comes to light. I think there just wasn’t enough here for me to latch onto, so I saw him as James Marsters, rather than as Barnabas Greeley

  44. Bald_Jason74 Says:

Oh. Also thought it was great to see Evelyn sort of coming on to Josephe and tying into BSG. One of the neat things about Caprica being a prequel is that were the show to be cancelled before it’s run it’s course (which would suck as I’m really enjoying Caprica) is that there are 4 seasons of BSG (plus some webisodes and movies) that to some degree wrap up what has begun with Caprica. The Evelyn / Josephe thing is one of those things. ;-0)

  45. CB2001 Says:

Hey Matt and Nat and any other BSG fans. If you haven’t heard about this yet, here you go: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/03/09/battlestar-galactica-online-is-coming/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+RockPaperShotgun+%28Rock%2C+Paper%2C+Shotgun%29

  46. Tiberius1111 Says:

@Tootie and VeganDirtEater, I loved your thoughtful commentary on equivalent parts of speech. You can’t find that on any random thread. ;-)

Matt and Nat have attracted a very interesting group people to their casts and I always enjoy reading everyone’s posts.

Not much to add this week that hasn’t already been said. Looking forward to Friday…and some more Tamara.

  47. Maria Sunderland Says:

CB2001: Yesssss I have! I’m over excited about this too XD I’ve been hoping for a BSG based MMO for a while. I don’t really play MMO’s, but I’d definitely give this one a hearty try!

  48. CB2001 Says:

Maria- I agree. I myself don’t play MMOs either. I just hope that the BSG MMO isn’t a pay monthly for subscription type of MMO (first off, that’s how the a majority of the interesting ones die quickly. Second of all, being as a student, I can’t afford a monthly subscription to a game). But I would be willing to pay for the initial game.

  49. Adam Says:

The most significant and powerful moment of this series that will ever be, happened in this ep. It was when Daniel pitched his schtick to the board about creating a new race to walk beside them and work for them…” WOW! We just witnessed the very moment that will change their lives forever!

  50. Brian Says:

    @the new BSG game

I’ll say it here, too: WHY an MMO?! For frak’s sake! Just make a quality single player simulator with a good campaign! It would make a MUCH better game, you wouldn’t go broke because you’re being crowded out by Blizzard, and best of all, it would make a MUCH better game. Oh, and it would make a MUCH BETTER GAME.

    Frakking idiots.

I am not optimistic about this announcement, but in the interest of curiosity (and the hope of a decent BSG game), I guess I’ll at least try it out.

  51. Doug Says:

BTW, the Guatrau was seen in the pilot episode, so he isn’t really a shadowy character. He asks Joseph to go threaten the defense minister and Joseph asks him if he can have some time to think about it. It’s implied that he is like a godfather or head of the Tauron mob. He gave Joseph the money to get through law school and in return Joseph acts as his “low-life lawyer”.

  52. donna Says:

Ok, so has anyone ever seen a ring like Sister Clarice’s large round one? Know where one could be purchased? My sister is nuts for it and I’d love to get her one.

Thank you for any help at all.
